wiper assembly upgrade
hi, peoples....
is it possible to change my wiper system on my 64 bug to the post 68 beetle type, 2 speed etc....im sure its possible but what would be my
options....retain wipers but change motors or change motors and go to the post 68 wiper assembly.....i dont know much about electrics but could give
it a crack if its not going to be a expensive upgrade..
its been converted to 12 volt....

I can't see why it wouldn't be possible to fit the 2 speed motor to the original mechanism and use the 1500 beetle wiper switch,I would also suggest
changing the wiper arms and spindles to the later type. If you are interested I have a few type 3 wiper mechanisms and 1 mechanism with the 2 speed
switch & wiring from a 70 type 3. I assume there are a few others who have done this conversion and can advise. Cheers Les

I'm not sure where you are, but I was only talking to Mike about this today at Vintage Vee Dub (02) 9789-1777. He is right up on the conversion and
was actually drawing a wiring diagram when I was there to send out to a customer with a wiper assembly.

i DO KNOW THAT 1968 Beetles did have the same sized shaft and spindles as the early models..
the shaft is round and the wiper arms are held on with a grub screw
I have seen the later wiper blades from a 68 beetle on early model beetles at shows, and i presume they also have the same wiper motor etc... with
two speeds..
it was a 1968 only in Australia but most probably also used in German 1966 and 1967 models..

Lee, it wasn't just 68, all aussie 1500 bugs except the last batch of late 70-early 71 1500s had that hopeless grubscrew style arrangement before
they swapped to the later SWF bolt on splined style.
Alot of them have been swapped to the late 70-71 setup cos they slip and strip badly.
72 and later motors wont self park unless you swap to the later stalk style switch.
Fabo, unless it's a fair weather toy or you're worried about keeping it original in appearance the later wiper arms are light years ahead of those 6
volt ones.
The early arms/blades barely keep any tension on the screen once they do 12 volt speeds or exceed 30mph

i just found these, they look like they slip on to the early arms and grub screwed tight ??? does that mean id now need a two speed motor and
switch......
