Timing a 009
Hi all,
It has been a long time since I have needed help..thankfully.
Can anyone tell me the correct amount of degrees BTDC or ATDC that I should set the timing to with a timing light.
The engine is bog standard apart from being a 1300 case with 1600 barrels and pistons.

7 to 10 degrees BTDC initial , ie static or at idle with most 009's but you really need to check the total advance and set it at about 30deg BTDC

Hi
wote an answer to this but tried to download a pic which was too big and deleted my post...
As Brain says You can start around 8 degrees BTDC at idle
but the 009 MUST be set at the top advanced setting
28 BTDC or 30 BTDC [You can try both]
with a timing light...
with the engine revving at maximum advance..
if You have a degree pulley its easy...
If Not I can give You measurements..
cheers

Thanks Lee, yes it has a degree pully the same as yours...only it is missing the red rings...lol
Will having it run around set to 8 deg BTDC do any damage till I get to change it next saturday?

No that is OK...
it may even be where the idle ends up after timing it...
its just that you need to tune it at maximum advance
as they can be different at idle...
cheers

Hi
Just rev the engine with the timing light attached to the spark plug lead,..
and move the distributor
so it reached but won't go over 28 or 30 BTDC...
when its revved... and tighten the dizzy screw...
and forgot about the idle setting....
cheers
