Overheating
Hi gents
Ok two weeks ago the car ran perfect. I pulled the engine, fitted new rear main seal, scat 36hp shroud with heater outlets and twin dellortos.
Put the thing back together, quivk tune and just took it for a spin down the highway.
After 20 mins of running started too loose power and oil pressure dropped. Pull over and the engine is frikken hot.
Only thing i havent put on is the heater tubes and the piece of tinware that goes over the muffler and has the two holes for the heater tubes. I
blocked of the heater outlets so all the air is going over the heads.
The fan is pushing a lot of air.
What do you guys think.

well the problem is the missing tinware and engine seal. you need all of it on so that the only air sucked in by the fan is the cool air from the
vents in the engine lid or the vents below the rear windscreen.
And it keeps the hot exhaust air from being sucked into the engine bay. Sounds like you've cooked your engine. possibly the rings. hopefully not!!

There's your problem.
Especially if you have heaterboxes on it still
WIthout the breastplate tin the fan is just sucking up all the hot air off the muffler, cylinder and heads.
And no hoses to the heaterboxes turns them into ovens under the heads.
Blocking off the heater outlets is better than leaving them open but it;s still not the right thing to do.
A hole in the plug about 1" keeps the airflow the same as heaterboxes create, plugging them off completely creates turbulence on one side.

When your heater is off, air still flows over the heater boxes and the hot air is "waste gated" under the car.
If you have early heater boxes with the aluminium fins - not flowing air over the heater boxes means they will radiat heat
Not such an issue with late boxes that are more just "J" tubes in a box
No beast plate means even more hot air is joing to be sucked in
Just asking - the Dells were jetted up and not lean??

You cooked the engine...
that piece of metal is a must to keep the HOT air under the car and NOT inside the engine bay where the Fan can suck the HOT air ... and that is NOT
Good ...
recycling Very Hot air...
same thing would have happened with no fan shroud...
or NO fan belt

Ha ha ha ha ha ha I've been away for 2 days and misse the best thread EVER.
Clinker, I think Lee is right. Cooking engines when you have all that machinery available to rebuild her can't be all that much of a problem
then.....
No rear tin will damage your engine. How many times does this need to be discussed. You had all these lessons when you were putting it back together
dude.
Maybe some ratio rockers to increase your effective valve duration will make it run cooler?

What is with people thinking its ok to run a car around without Tinware!!!!  We just bought a Beetle from DARWIN that has had some money spent on the performance of the engine, but no bloody tinware

Had a story recently where a Bris Professional recommended a client run in his engine without the fan shroud......needed another new engine within a
week .....

Looked at a beetle at Denman NSW while back...
it was a 1964 standard beetle but it was being driven without any heater hoses or plugs on the fan shroud...

I spotted a white one on the freeeway near Nabiac this afternoon with a Carerra kit that had the engine lid tied in the fully open position,I
couldn't work out what the big black bit was from a distance but as i got closer it became obvious.
