Help Identifying My Engine

Hi all, I'm trying to identify the engine in my 1968 Beetle.

Its supposed to be a 1500cc.

The Engine No is W960818P.

Most of the websites I've been on indicate that the "W" code is only on the Type 4 engine.
I've spotted some that indicate the "W" code is on the Porsche 914 1700cc engine from 1970?
Can anyone clarify this for me and what having a Porsche 914 engine means for spares etc?

Cheers:cool:

I think your engine might have a Police number stamped on it? It may have had a replacement case at some point that usually comes with a blank engine number and you have to get the Police to put one on.

Cheers

Steve

Could that be a WA police issue number?

I know the NSW ones are NxxxxxxP and the Vic ones VxxxxxxxP so makes sense.

The Police plate seems the most likely, a bit of research tells me that type 4 engine is nothing like the Type 1 to 3s!

Thanks for the info .

If its a Porsche/VW type 4 engine it would have an oil filter hanging off it.. and look very different to the normal VW engine.

If its a Police number then its most likely a 1600 replacement engine or a new case and 1600 pistons etc..

any chance of a photo of the engine?

Here you go, pulled it fresh out of the beetle today, with some help from two of my lads, a small trolley jack, jackstands and imaginitive use of a skateboard and piles of housebricks:crazy::!:

Does the dog house shroud indicate a 1600?

Have a peek on the bottom sides of the crankcase (just behind the exhaust J tubes) to see if it has VW Brazil cast into the case. That should tell you if it's a replacement case

Defiantly a universal replacement case, first give away is the lack of a gallery plug under the dist.

Hi,
I was also after some info on the engine codes. I have a 67 Beetle and the engine code under the generator stand is F 1055792. It also has 519 stamped on the case near the the flywheel. I just want to find out so that I can order the correct engine rebuild kit. Thanks for any help, Al.

F is a 1300cc single port Type 1 engine, 1965-70, so it's correct for your car. After 40+ years they can have almost anything in them by now.

Thanks Phil. Appreciate the help.
While we're on the subject, the engine was running well when I bought the car so I was thinking of just getting new barrels, pistons and a gasket kit and putting it back together.
I have had the tins powder coated and the engine has been cleaned down. I pulled the heads off and there was a bit of carbon in them, so I was going to get the heads cleaned up and have the valves re-seated. Hopefully that should give me a reliable every day runner without to much outlay.
Do you suggest anything else to make it more reliable?
