Spluttering and dies past 1800-2k rpm ???
Crowd sourcing possible problems.
Car details: 60'Baja running a tp1600.
Ok, Stick with me while I explain what happened and what I've done so far.
Just got out onto Stockton Dunes two weeks ago and after driving over the fifth or sixth dune it started spluttering when under load up the dune.
Lower revs it drives fine, idles fine but after about 1800/2000 rpm it dies from misfiring or flooding although it doesn't smell rich.
So whilst on the dunes I cleaned the carb. No change. Came home at 70kph and swapped out the coil. Still no change. So thinking it was the condensor I
change the dizzy for a flame thrower electronic ignition. No change.
So I visited my local Vdub mechanic and a mate. Hilly, the mechanic said swap out the plugs and my mate Mick said it sound like the carb as it was
hard to tune. So I've put in a replacement 34 PICT 4, changed the coil (for a bosch blue) and swapped out the leads and plugs.
Result: Still exactly the same. No change from when it died in the top end at the dunes. I'm happy to post video if that would help people diagnose /
trouble shoot.
I'm out of ideas. I think I'll check the valves and compression next. I've gone as far as my experience has taken me. Now I'm keen to see what
others can suggest. The problem is definitely simple but elusive thus far.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

blocked fuel line??? When my bus had a rusty tank it would idle fine ,but once driving and putting in the revs it would die a death,eventually had to
drain the tank and out came about a cup of rust. 1 por15 tank treatment later i have no more problems

Ok Pod - Enjoying a Mango and beer at the moment but when I've got my beer goggles off I'll check the fuel filter and line. Could be a kink
somewhere alone the line perhaps. Thanks for your suggestion. Something I did think of while at stocko but hadn't looked further than the filter.

when you took the carby off was the float bowl full of fuel or just had a little in it? It does sound like a dodgy pump or a blocked line. I have had
this before. After your long drive home did the engine smell hot?
Did you set the gaps on the plugs? Probobly not spark blow out as it happend suddenly after it was running fine and I have only had this on Ricers at
High revvs.

Hi Steve
sounds like the fuel bowl is running out of fuel...
more You use it the lower it gets until it runs out...
and splutters...
Could be a blocked fuel fiilter ??
in the fuel pump?? or additional..
the fuel tanks have a gauze filter in them...
You may have something in the fuel tank restricting the flow of fuel...
I took this strainer out of My car and have installed a Z91 ryco fuel filter under the tank.. just replaced it actually...
wasn't blocked but had some dirt in it...

You didn't try the rotor in the distributor? although You did change dissies... that rules that out... Vws have a resistor in the rotor which can
burn out.. so pays to carry a spare rotor.
and you changed carburetors.... about the only thing left is the fuel tank Steve...
just unscrew the nut under the tank...
after You have drained the tank... lol
and You will find the gauze screen cone shaped on the pipe..
You can clean it or toss it... lol
also, the fuel tap lever on the floor...
Vertical is ON [12 o clock]
horizontal is Reserve [1 Gallon] [3 o clock]
half way between is OFF... 45 degrees... [between 1 & 2]

Thanks guys for your suggestions.
I have written down on my list of things to go through.
* Rotor button movement / switching over (resistor)
* Inlet manifold - check rubbers and for air leaks
* Fuel pump & fuel line function and operation.
* Fuel bowl (needle and seat).
* Fuel tank outlet and fuel filter.
I don't have a fuel kick tap or a gauze filter in the tank. I removed it when I put the new tank in and put a fuel filter inline below it.
Yes Ian. I am looking forward to seeing a heap of guys this weekend, including you. Should be a fantastic get together so even if Yowie Baja is not
running I'll still be there.
Appreciate all your suggestions. I will go through systematically and try and find the issue.
Will keep you posted on my progress and what the actual problem ended up being.

its neither of those then Steve...
You are running out of something....
AIR - FUEL - or Spark ???
tricky one steve....
did you check the spark plug leads?
You said You changed the distributor??
so the timing can't be out??

Check your fuel line for blockage.
You might also want to check your distributor is advancing.

I had a similar problem and changed the plug leads and that fixed it up.

is this problem just under load or both free revving and load?

unless BOTH carbies had the auto choke blocked ...
that is - they were not connected to POWER....++
so the engine wouldn't rev due to lack of AIR....

Problem sorted.
I knew it would be something small and in my face but what?
Friggin air cleaner.
It was too restrictive. The original that was on the motor was no good for Stockton beach so I had put a stocking over it in the interim until I could
get a better system. The filter with that had come apart and was blocking the intake. I replaced it with mattress foam and didn't realize it would be
too restrictive at the higher revs. Seems it is. As my Baja has been around so much sand lately I didn't think to try and run it without a filter.
Just asking it to eat sand and die.
So...
Thank you all so very much for helping me. In the end I took it to my local mechanic who checked the fuel pressures, plug volts and a couple of other
things. Thank fully it was fixed before the big weekend.
