Oil in air filter box


Panic stations,my newly rebuilt engine in my beloved kombi has got oil in the air cleaner box. Can anyone tell me how or who

too much oil??
is the crankcase breather hose connected to the air cleaner??
is the exhaust blue?

This is normal for many VWs...
do You have a breather hose going under the engine?
most engines had them..
If You don't have one then all the oil fumes end up in the air cleaner

I put a smaller hose in the air cleaner hose so most of the oil fumes go out the bottom hose [or pipe]

Thanks for the replies guys, I,ve been flat-out with work sorry I didn,t respond earlier. Silver, oil level is on the money,crankcase breather hose is connected to air cleaner but if I turn engine over oil is coming out breather, exhaust not blue. Lucky Phil I,ve done about 1000 k since rebuild and it was going well except for the faint fuel smell. 68 auto bug, I do have a breather hose going under engine. Why is oil going from crankcase breather into air cleaner? There was a fair bit in their. Learn me o wise ones please.

is the splash plate fitted under the genny /alternator post this would be a possible cause of your problem

Is it a stock displacement or oversize?
Oversize engines need an aftermarket breather box.

Hey chaps after further investigation , I have bigger issues. I,ve lost compression in 2 cylinders,so frustrating after having had engine out Twice already. First time too do top end only , second for new barrels ,pistons oil rings and valves. She,s just a standard 2ltr,and I,ve only done 2000 kms also put new fuel solenoid in. To me burnt valves could be the cause but I wasn't, running it too lean? I just want to drive it!

Retension the heads and do the tappets first.

Bit the bullet today and pulled the engine out again! Number 3 piston was totally rooted,it got that hot it melted the head of piston scored the barrel and stuffed the valves. I wouldn,t have done 2000kms on my rebuilt engine, would love too know why the kombi gods have torchered me so? Would appreciate any words of wisdom

Did you install oil deflector / under alt or generator stand / correctly ?

In that case I guess, there is a bit of blow by, since engine is a fresh built..

What fuel were you using?
What brand of oil filter?

I was using unleaded fuel, having after market heads thought that would be ok, oil filter in bin was full of metal

Seems like alot more wrong now !!!! The metal could have been since the piston damage???
How did the engine sound on cold start? Did it rumble initially and go quieter when the oil pressure light whent out?
How well was it tuned? Any flat spot off idle? What distributer and ignition timing spec?

It does not need lead and they never have but they need a decent octane.

Engine was going like a train before my hiccup, running 6 degrees advance and 35 degrees total
