Shuddering in the rear end?
I've been having a problem for a few weeks now with a bad shuddering in the rear end of my bug. (its a 64, original 1200)
It appeared not long after I lowered it. I assumed it was caused by the toe in created from a 2-spline drop, so I raised it back up 1 spline and it
went away.
I extended the springplates, lowered it 2-splines again, and set the wheel alignment and it still does it.
From here I figured it may be a gearbox mount, so I replaced the front mount, and it's still doing it.
It's very faint in 2nd, and 4th gear, but really bad in 3rd, and like I said, it's not there when its between stock height & 1-spline drop.
What else could it be? I'm hoping its not terminal, but I'm out of ideas!!
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Dave

Sorry, thought I'd covered everything, lol
Its only under acceleration. When I'm not accelerating or the clutch is dis-engaged its fine.
Like I said it's definately worse in 3rd gear. I figured it wasn't the clutch as it would be bad in all 4 gears, but it's none existent in 1st

The only thing I can think of is the axles are operating at too an extreme angle for the fulcrum plates or axle spade to cope with, or just running
out of where they have been happy. Does it do it less under light throttle acceleration, odd that it doesn't do it in first. The suspension tends to
squat further under power. Show us a pic of your bump stop (or lack of) at ride ht. Every car is slightly different ride height depending on the age
and amount of sag the bars have, so to lower it two splines means nothing, it may be sitting on the stops and binding in the axles uni joint in the
diff.

Its not ridiculously low. I've seen bugs lowered 3 splines with no problems. In fact mine didn't do this when it was lowered 3 splines
I've removed the bumpstops and tabs, but this is the ride height.

The rear mounts look okay from what I can see. I figure they wouldn't make much difference as they bolt through the bellhousing?
I might try adjusting the clutch.
I have a new motor going in soon, so I don't want to have to replace the clutch until I pull the motor

Check the kink in the Bowden tube, check rear gearbox mount, check engine bolts, check clutch freeplay n if none of them then clutch friction plate
springs maybe to blame
madness is in the eye of the beholder

Okay.
Well thanks everyone for your input. I'm trying to fast track getting the new motor put in, so I'm going to have to put up with it til then.
I planned on installing new clutch assembly, throwout bearing and mounts anyway, so i'll get that all replaced and checked at GC Veedub when they
swap the motors over.
