1303 IRS rear bearing hub NUT


G’day guys,
I have just noticed my 1303 IRS rear bearing hub castled nut is not tightening up as far as it should, after I took the wheel off I noticed the brake drum isn’t slidding on as far as its ment to (its about 7-10mm from where it should sit).

I notice the spacer that sits against the inside of the brake drum hub protrudes past the bearing seal about 10mm is this right?

The bearings have minimal play and the hub spins freely without any noise but the hub nut doesn’t go on far enough to get a split pin through the hole.

Any ideas what may be causing this?
I’ll be removing the bearings and stub axle tomorrow night to try to see whats going on.

Nope, should be pretty well flush with the seal.
What's holding the sapcer out?
is it the wrong one?

From what I can see the tube that the roller bearing runs on is stopping the spaces going in further.

The hubs do look like they have been apart before (by the previous owner) the spacer would be about 20mm thick and has a small bevel in one end.

Ok, first the only 'spacer' is the one between the inner part of the 2 bearings. This is just a thick wall tube section. The inner races of the 2 bearings butt up against this spacer n then the drum butts up to the outer bearing inner race. The castle nut now clamps it all together.

If there is thread on the spindle still showing when the nut stops moving you have one of 2 issues. 1) castle nut thread is buggered, but unlikely as goes on easily to a point 2) the spindle thread is fooked, maybe a die will sort this out.

Third option is you have early or machined drums that need an external spacer to take up the slack.

Ok guys,
Turns out the roller bearing inner wasn’t going into the bearing right because of a mangled roller cage!, I have put up a pic of the whole assembly, as you can see who ever replaced the bearings last time has just used a genecic engineering roller bearing! oh well new parts on the way, should be back on the road in no time :cool:

The old drums looking a bit second hand as well.

I have had a bit of fun trying to track down a bearing kit today. One shop has a kit with a 7206 angular contact ball bearing (takes side load) and another shop has a kit with a 6206 general ball bearing both kits are meant for a 1303.

I thought Id throw it out there and get your opinions on which is correct?

Rather than a kit go to a bearing outlet and purchase individual bearings and seals. 6206 deep groove for the inner and a cylindrical roller beraing NU206 for the outer. The seals are a bit thinner than original. 62 x 45 x 8 is what you get but ok. The two bearings and two seals should get some change from 50 bucks............ they did two days ago from ABC bearngs here in Sydney.

Don't forget to take the seal out of the deep groove at least on the side facing in otherwise it relies on the factory grease only. Better to have it open to the greater supply.

Just call Vintage Vee Dub Supplies and they will send out the correct parts within a couple of days. They will actually know what they are doing.



I read it on samba, so it must be correct.

Sometimes Volkswagen dealers sell spare parts. Amazing isn't it!:lol:

Let's be clear here. These are the correct part numbers. DubCty asked for the bearing numbers which are the 6206 and NU206. Bearing suppliers may have junk brands but generally their reputation is too valuable to supply crapp to industry. That is what I have answered along with a considerable cost saving to him just for the exercise of walking into ABC Bearings, Bearing Services, etc etc. Most owners on here seem to be wanting to save a few $$ here and there so that was my aim in this instance. The parts are at least the same quality of those in VVW one would think.

The original seal width seems to have been unavailable for some time now. The seals supplied by the bearing supplier is now only 8mm wide rather than the approx 10mm of original. The replacement seal is a double lip energised type and is most likely of better quality than the originals.

They had the correct parts there as per bearing numbers on Monday when I picked the last set up for what ever the Bug is with the MacPherson Strut front end! The same numbers have worked on Bugs and Type 3 vehicles since about 1969 that I know of.

So I popped in to the shop with the 6206 bearing kit and got everything for $50 that’s both bearings two seals three O’rings and a gasket for the bearings retainer plate.
Its all back together with molly grease and should be good for another 30yrs

Thanks for all the help guys.

P.S I won’t be walking in to ABC bearings any time soon as it’s a long drive there!

Always check the UK vendors as with the current exchange rate you can get most things just over half price and thats including postage.
I do support Oz companies when they aren't trying to rip me off :)
