STEERING BOX CLAMPS ON TYPE 1 CHASSIS
ON BEETLES THE CLAMP MUST BE POINTED FORWARD AT NUMBER 12
ON KARMANN GHIAS THE CLAMPS MUST BE POINTED FORWARD AT NUMBER 13
TYPE 1 VEHICLES ONLY -- VERY IMPORTANT...
IF LIKE ME YOU DIDN'T KNOW THERE WAS A NUMBER
UNDER ALL THAT PAINT... LOL

Lee,
I think you have a typo, as in your photo they are stamped 13 & 14. Also, I didn't know there were any numbers, can you elaborate on what the
number is meant to line up with please.
Thanks, Kev

Well my guess is the numbers related to Type 13 and Type 14 (Beetle and Ghia respectively)
Basic gist of it, the KG dash sits in a different position in the shell than a Beetle dash does, so the steering column is at a different angle....
effectively more laid back I think.
As a result the steering box needs to sit at a different angle on the beam to make sure the column is in line with the input shaft on the box.
Rather than having two different brackets, VW made the little offset hole in a slightly different position on each side of the bracket and you just
mount them differently for each type of car... pretty clever !!!
Obviously if you put it round the wrong way, the input shaft and steering column won't be in a straight line and the rubber donut will have to try
and take it all up...
