trans help
this should probably go in tech of help but this will probably get more views for the info i need.
Im building a cheap offroad car using a VW trans (3 rib i think) but it needs a tear down and inspection and possibly some of the good bits if i can
get them from america.
anyway does anyone know of a manual or website that has all the details in it?
This will be my first attempt at a VW tear down and iff it goes to sh!t then i will get a pro to do it but i need to save my coin.
also where can i get spares from these days without forking out an arm and a leg?

also should say i wont by running massive power though this but i want the peace of mind to do it right, i was thinking the super diff thing, 4 spider
gears etc
It will be powered by a hyundai excel 1600 motor

I suggest you don't start rebuilding a volksie transmission without the jigs and a bit of knowledge,if you aren't familiar take it to someone who
knows and save a lot of grief.

i would grumble but our budget for building this entire car is currently 340$ yes thats right, but the kids want one so thats what were starting with.
if it hits the fan ill put it away and drag another out i have stashed away and use it as is but it wont be as strong.
the rest of the car is going to be built with donations from the parents and other people i know

chance are i have the tools here, after some farnarcling around i find it isnt a late BUS IRS box but a 60s swing axle........... hoping i can swap
or sell it now and fund getting another one

I think the bentley manuals had a section on gearboxes.
pickstock, I read your other thread re gearbox, If you can't id irs from swing axle I would not be taking on a rebuild just buy a good 2nd hand
gearbox to begin with.

yeah ive decided we wont be using this gb. Not so much the rebuild but, im not scared of trying it. And id thought about just putting a new diff and
side covers on instead of ripping it all apart.
But still we want an IRS.
I bought the box site unseen from a seller who said it came from a buggy built in the 80s so imagined it would be somthing substansial.
As for not knowing my VWs, your dead right there. When we started this with a baja idea i picked a beetle up (for the right price) then found its a
super and isnt any good.... Mehs VW rally car

not meaning to slag you off mate, i would personally rebuild an engine than gearbox any day, there are too many specialised tools involved.
There may be some one that has a good IRS gearbox for sale.

nah thats right mate
i understand whats easier and i want that but it has to fit within our budget.
i MAY (!) have found the answer, we got invited to a property up north this weekend just gone, spent 3 days camping and hiking and i stayed back to
fill the water and get supplies.
At the old shed we were told to get water from the old blokes grand daughter was there with her partners family, opened up the shed, pushed a BAJA out
and set up in there.
no cage, twin carb type 4 (flat fan on the rear instead of on top right?) IRS everything else seemed to be pretty good expect for not being in heavy
use for years. Apparently it runs and runs well but due to the cage theyve been to worried of crashng

+1 gearboxes and diffs are scary to rebuild unless your really know what you are doing and they require special tools which are not that easy to get
hold of.
oh, btw I have an IRS single side cover box with about ~ 30k factory miles.
I have been keeping for years for no purpose

90% of our tools are made in the shop.
and with the drawings from VW that got sent the to dealers of how to make the tools we should be right.
If this goes ahead we might just get a Subaru 5 speed and have the diff made up. Its too hard to find one that we need, for our price and get it too
