Strange chassis number
Yesterday I bought my next project; a 1967 Hebmuller type home built convertible with a turtle deck above the gear box and a little engine lid. It has
really ugly fibreglass wide mudguards and Frenched in LH Torana tail lights. I'm going to radically change it, so all that really doesn't matter.
The car was registered in WA with the following chassis number.
196329669
I can't find that in my copy of Muir.
I've very carefully checked the pan and that is the number that is stamped on the pan.
Is there a 1 missing from the front of the chassis number? It seems to me that there should be two ones at the start of the number.
Should the chassis number have 10 digits, rather than 9?
Can anyone clear this up for me?

you will find the Aussie chassis number system on here some where
your chassis is Aussie built 1 being a bug 9 being aussie 6 being 1966
Forget about looking in Mr Muirs book
its all good

I wasn't worried about the legitimacy of the chassis number.
Usually Muir has helped me with numbers. This time he didn't.

Muir is an American book, for American-spec VWs that were made in Germany.
OUR VWs were made in Melbourne. The Americans don't know about Australian-made VWs.

wasn't a Mechanic etc..

I'm sure it was Bob Hoover who reckoned Muir thought the choke was just a government conspiracy to waste fuel.... 
He had his ways that worked for him, kick it the guts and let it idle while he rolled a joint, then off he went on his merry way.
throw out those damn thermostats for the same reason
