Extractor exhaust for 2.0l Kombi.
Has anyone had any luck recently finding a replacement exhaust for a 2.0l Kom ? I raised the question on the forum a few months ago and was shouted
down by enthusiasts for the stock system. So I bought what I was told was an original, and now the fuel consumption is down to 23mpg, from 28mpg and
it won't pull up Lapstone hill (Blue Mountains area) in top any more.

I stopped mucking around with mild steel systems and got a SS extractor made up! cost me $500 but when you take into account you only get 2-3 years
out of a $250 MS one I think it was worth it!

Nitram_Ztilad,
Reading your old post I assume you have an otherwise stock 2L dual carb motor??? No mods??
Strange your experience conflicts with the experience of others. 28mpg does sound unusually high for an old Kombi though.
Can you not source the exhaust you used previously?
I know of some one with an SS extractor exhaust for a type 4 (custom made). Not sure if it's complete or if it bolts to the stock heat
exchangers. I can find out if your interested.
Do you still have the heat exchangers, or did your previous system replace the whole exhaust system???

Hi Andy.
Mine bolts up to the OEM heat exchangers, inch and 5/8 ss tube, I wanted a SS muffler on it, but when I went down to pick it up, he had a SS hot dog
on her! I took it home and it has grown on me now and I actually like the sound, very crisp down low and quite at cruising speed, it must be OK Alan
at Stokers loves it so it must be good! :thumb

That exhaust is for sale by the way. I don't know any details but can find out if some ones interested.
I'm a fan of the stock sound myself, but that's all I've ever had :thumb
I agree with mns though, 28mpg is VERY desirable.

28mpg was in a 1974ish 2.0l dual cab, with two adults-otherwise unladen. I drove to Forbes from Springwood via Orange and back via Canowindra and
Blaney the next day. We travelled at about 85k/h all the time, and I don't push it hard on the hills.
The car is standard carbureator engine, other than the exhaust which was a Thunderbird quiet muffler, but I had removed the quiet bit and replaced it
with a hotdog. It's a bit noisy outside, but from inside it's nothing more than a pleasant growl that lets you know it's working.
With the "stock" muffler (which I'm now told was made in Sweden or somewhere other than Germany) it doesn't pull from down low
anywhere near as well, doesn't hold on on the hills, and when cruising on the flat you need more throttle to maintain the same speed. The whole
feel of the motor is different and anyone who reckons it's all psychological is probably an RTA employee on a mission !
We also have a '77 2.0l Microbus that we took to Tasmania last Xmas. It's stock other than a Crane electronic ignition and with that
semi-home made exhaust will also get excellent mileage on country roads where you're in top most of the time if you don't cane it along. If
you thrash it or tow a trailer then the fuel consumption goes through the floor.
Andy, I'd be interested in that s/s system. I'm using the stock heat exchanger headers so I'm looking for something to bolt onto the
back of them. Get the owner to give me a call on 0412 169255 anytime.

Ok Nitram_Ztilad,
Details so far are, SS pipes with tuned length, bolts onto stock headers/heat exchangers. Never been used. They are a custom unit, muffler is part of
it also (all one piece). The person that made it has apparently made a number of them, so has some experience. Don't have any details on what it
does for performance or noise etc. though. It fit's where the stock muffler is and will not take up much more room if any.
He said that he wouldn't budge from $600 though, apparently cost him more than that to buy some time ago. Not sure what freight will be for you,
~$50-100 maybe??
Let me know if your still interested and I'll organise it for you.
I might even be interested, as Robo said they will certainly last well.
If your new stock exhaust is good (brand etc) I'd consider some sort of exchange also?

Hi Ben
I rang Genie, couple of years back, and they said they didn't make them! although I remember seeing an advert for Kombi SS extractors in the
early 80's.
Did you have to get them to start remanufacturing, or has it been continuous all the time! would have saved me all the hassel of getting custom
headers made.
