external oil filter

I have an external oil pump housing fitted to a motor that came on a project.
The outlet was connected directly to the inlet via a loop in the hose.
I've since bought a filter block and need to know which side of the oil pump pushes oil to the filter.
When looking at the pump from the rear of the motor (as when you open the decklid) one outlet is at the bottom left, the other top right.
Any ideas??

The fitting on the pump cover goes to the inlet of the filter housing and the outlet from the filter housing goes to the fitting on the end of main galley.

RH side of oil pump is the pickup from the sump, LH side is the outlet that goes to the bearings

Just reread your post...sounds like you have a semi auto oil pump that has the trans pump added on the back, hence the pump was not used and plumbed outlet to inlet. Type 1 oil pumps have the inlet on the lower right, outlet upper left.

Seen that a couple of times lately.

Could also just be a variation of a Maxi pump with the discharge on the right.

Well you wouldn't think so but companies like Empi are constantly finding new ways of surprising me with shitty designed parts.

Guru, is your oil pump looking more like this?

It says 'out' at the bottom left & 'in' at the top right.

That's an old Claudes Buggies oil pump, it's probably as old as what the engine is.
