Shifter modifying
This is probably more suited in the tech area but it's here because I'm not sure if the shifter design changed over the years. The bug shifter is a
4 speed design but seeing as I'm changing the box to a 5 speed I want to know if using the original 4 speed shifter will work. I know there is
diagrams shown on how to mate up the linkages between the two but I'm wondering if anyone has run into issues with doing this. Would buying a 5 speed
designed gear shift be more suited because it is designed to move 5 gears and not 4?
Thought? Advice?

SEEING HOW THE NORMAL SHIFTER HAS A REVERSE LOCKOUT PLATE THAT REALLY ONLY ALLOW YOU TO MOVE IN 4 PLANES... and all the accessorie shiftes all chang
in a similar 4 plane way so Io, Im assuming a special shift would be used... or a modified standard shifter... may be..??
cheers

What 5-speed are you fitting....I believe they all will require a custom shifter.

It's all clear as day on Todds website....

Gear Shift for all Beetles: Subaru transmissions have an internal reverse-lockout mechanism so you cannot accidentally select reverse. Beetles have an
external reverse lockout mechanism via a plate under the gear lever. This plate has tabs that require you to pull a lever over the tab in order to
select reverse. When using a Subaru transmission, remove these tabs and re-install the plate under the gear lever.
