Subie Gearbox conversion HELP

I'm just wondering if anyone could help me out?

I have a 1968 Beetle with a EA82T engine, and it currently has a VW T3 gearbox which has held out over the 10 plus years it has been in the beetle, but now the gearbox has taken the brunt resulting in" no reverse or 2nd gear".

The car will also be getting a new engine very shortly which will be a 2L built rally engine, so I need something that will work with the increase of power etc.

I do have a 5sp Subaru gearbox to go into the 68, which obviously will need the correct parts from Subarugears ( I have also emailed them in regards to this) to make the conversion happen, but I'm wondering can anyone please recommend anyone to do the work/conversion to the gearbox and fit it.

I'm located in Canberra and I have called a couple of local transmission/gearbox mechanics with no luck, no one is willing or interested. I am willing to bring the car to Sydney or somewhere in our surrounds that is experienced and willing.

Since hubby is currently deployed O/S, we are unable to do this ourselves.

Thanks in advance for any info/help

Renee

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car. Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how far you take the wall with you.

Did it just happen suddenly or been getting progressively worse?

no second or reverse (assume the others are all still fine?) sounds almost like it could be a selector and/or shifter issue rather than a gearbox problem

Progressively getting worse Joel, I have only had the car just over a year. Ive had the gear stick/shift adjusted with no luck what so ever.
Yes all other gears are fine also.

Try some wrx people I know a place in adelaide that will rebuild the subaru gearbox with reverse gears but they would still send the front section off to be machine somewhere else. I think you can also send Subaru gears bits for machining (but freight would cost a bit) then have it all put back together by a local subaru or gearbox specialist. Not sure if somewhere like MRT would do it or how much it would be. Good luck, and the new engine sounds good too.

No dramas with Subarugears building the gearbox for you - after all we are only 3 hours away.
I think I have a good mechanic solution for you - someone that has done a 5 speed and EJ20T into beetle before and is close to Canberra.
