FS: good 1600 long block (needs assembly / work) $250 + $75 (for heads)

Hi,

1600cc. Based on the 'no cam bearings' 1500 cc case and thus won't suit my hyper application, but great for a stock setup/run about. Was said to be nice running prior to purchase at vw Action day for $450 (not including new pistons). had immaculate end float, stripped down for a tidy up after sittin on pallet indoors for many years.

long block package: Case, Cam, Crank, rods some hardware (fasters, pressure relief valve etc), lifters, cam timing gear, dissy drive shaft, barrels with NEW (yes 0km) pistons, no rings sorry, but barrels will need hone. + single port 1600 cc heads (add $75)

call, email or pm me. Buyer to organise freight.

Seller: Christopher Leete
Mob: 0402 568 003
Location: Cornubia 4130 QLD
Price: $250 + $75.

(I've rotated the photo the right way up now)
Please note! Initially the engine number photo was upside down in the photo. and is located at the parting seem at the top of the case as opposed to under the generator stand. The engine number starts with a 0, as per http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/engine_letters.php.  With the upside down photo, it looked like it started with a 9 (the upside down 6 at the end) which made it look like a 1200, but the 0 at the start of the engine number proves its a type 3 1500 not a 1200cc, as well as where its printed.

Furthermore,

They are similar cases but as described in page 36 of Tom Wilson's How to rebuild your volkswagen, its beefier than the 1200 but lacks the cam insert bearings, like the 1200. and has the 85.5mm bores ready to slip in 1600 pistons barrels and heads.

Any questions or doubts, please don't hesitate to ask.

I thought 1500 engines all had cam bearings??? Mine certainly does and Bentley quotes cam bearing diameters at 24.99mm - 25.00 mm new?

Negative. If the engine number starts with 0 then its a type three engine that doesn't have cam bearings, just like this physical example. On that note, there are different variations of type 3's, maybe the later engines in the type 3 model range had the cam bearings. But this one in particular doesn't.

This is confirmed again in the Samba link as provided ( http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/engine_letters.php ).

I can also scan the book "How to Rebuild Volkwagen Air cooled Engines" (page 36) denoting the 1500 engine with no cam bearings.

Trippy hey. REMEMBER, this type 3 block was built PRIOR to the 1300cc engine, which has the cam bearings (which came in 67, type 3 has been around longer than that).

None the less its a fine base for a stock engine. I'm suprised no one has jumped on it seeing that the journals for the cam have plenty of life. At $250 for an entire short block, as opposed to paying $800 or so for a new case alone, for a stock engine this would be a great way to start. Worst case i'll put it in the 'to do later' pile and it'll happily compliment my future airboat project. Problem is i wouldn't mind getting some cash back for it at the moment to built the appropriate engine i need for this summer's baja schinanigans.
