Edna- first ever vw project

Hello, and welcome to my build thread, allow me to introduce myself.

My name is Ivan, and i am about to embark on my first ever VW build. Until now my experience has been with falcons, and a mild bit of modding on the wifes 2000 Beetle.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb7/v8falconsrule/beetlepiccies029.jpg

recently we set out to find an old school Beetle to do up, and stummbled across our Edna. i am led to believe she is a '68 1500, manual. Originally a daily driver, she had been in a shed for the last 10 years.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb7/v8falconsrule/edna%2068%20vw/FILE0672.jpg

so after a couple of months of waiting patiently, the time has come to begin the madness, so come with me on what is sure to be an entertaining, frustrating, enlightening journey.

i had no idea how easy these little cars are to pull apart, the only components left in the car are the engine, gearbox, steering/suspension, and fuel tank.

Good to see you've thrown the old falcon out into the cold.
(in the photo above without the front bumper.)
Just kidding.

Good luck with the build.

Good to see another one getting some love.

Welcome to here, looks like an excellent starting point.
You keeping it stock or mod it?

Haha I was going to comment on the disappointment with the removal of that "forced induction" system lol
Looks like a solid starter and good luck with it. You are on a journey now!

Plans are mild rebuild, stick with the 1500, probably go dual port, twin carbs( because they look hot and more go is always good), gt8 wheels, black interior, knock a smidge out of the ride height, and paint metallic pink over white ( wife's car remember). I want simple reliable but cute and classy.

I am hoping to bring in some interesting mods and details- more on those at it comes together.

I wasn't sure about the jacking point, the original jack tube is bashed to bugggery, so I used the seam and watched for crushing.
The falcon in the drive is the parts car for my xr8 sprint.... Some parts from it will definently end up in Edna- pity the 5Lt Windsor won't fit, well not without sacrificing my marriage anyway...

alrighty guys, i need some help identifing Edna. While i beleive she is a 68 model with a 1500, i can't be sure. i have the chassis number from under the seat, which reads 118.76.5244 the decimal places may actually be rust spots.... the problem i have is that i can only find examples of 68 numbers ending at 118 1016 100..

how can i verify Ednas actual age (it is impolite to ask a lady after all). also i found a sticker in the glovebox lid stating the case ( i pressume the engine case) has been replaced, how can i be sure it is a 1500? is it a case of measuring the bores and the swept area of the piston?

no fuel door release that i have seen, the fuel flap is able to be opened from outside, just spring loaded, with a lockable fuel cap. there is a bonnet (front boot??) release lever on the lhd side of the dash, unknown if factory or added later though.

just out of curiousity, in terms of dating these cars do you go by the body build year, or the pan build year?

Both
If it has no fuel door release definitely a 68
69 on ward had internal release and per 68 had internal filler,

ok cool thanks for that, at least that narrows the possabilities for the body/ chassis. now, the next question is- what is thw US equivilent of our '68 model- i'm needing more in terms of trims, etc.
