If you still have the 36HP or 40HP motor, I rekn the easiest way to improve the output is to take it out, lovingly spray WD and gladwrap it, then put
it into the corner under the bench and find a 1500 or 1600.
The older box you have now will still take 60rwhp OK, remembering you can blow a stock IRS box with a stock 1600 if you try hard enough, just don't
treat it like a MR2 or Supra and you'll be fine! No flat-to-the-floor clutch dumps with big tyres, or donuts, and it will be happy as a pig in
mud.
A stock 1500 single port is cheap and plentiful, good smooth torque motor, and with a set of baby 1.3/8" pipes, a stock cam with ratio rockers, good
valve seat cuts and a jetted Solex 34 or other 1BBL carb (Strommies off old Holdens or Fords work REALLY well) and stock manifold will make so close
to double the original output of the 1200 you'll be grinning like an idiot for the next 150000km, this package should outlast the car. Get a SVDA
dizzy to suit the carby, worth every cent in driveability and ease of tuning/jetting. Twin port heads make an extra 20HP over this, but single port
heads are cheap as crap brand new (still available ex-US), handle the heat loading much better, and seem smoother and idle nicer for some reason, so
no need to upgrade if you find a SP in good nick for your intended uses.
Just imagine happily cruising your '59 at 100-110kph all day while only using 7L/100km.........
Oh, and you can even overtake someone!
