Working on 1600 T1 motor in bay kombi
Quick question.
Do you have to drop the engine out of a bay kombi to give it a freshen up ie do the basic seals including the oil cooler seals and take off the
tinware in order to paint said tinware? It is on my "to do" list but I would rather remove a few bits a couple of times over a couple of weekends
than drop the engine if it isn't needed.
There seems to be a heck of a lot of room in there plus the access panel from the top as well so has anyone done it and can it be done?

drop it out , doesnt take long and u can do rear main seal and check clutch at the same time

Clutch is 12 months old so should be ok. I'm just concerned that getting it out and back in in a weekend will be pushing it and I'd hate to be stuck
on monday with no engine!

If you know what you're doing, then you should be able to get the engine out and back in within about 45 minutes. The first time I took a Beetle
engine out, it took half a day. The second time, it took half an hour. The difference was knowing what to do!

It has been about 23 years since I dropped one out and that was a very early type 3 motor dropped out of a 62 wagon, so probably more complicated than
a bus. Mind you I did the type 3 on the front lawn of my house with a borrowed trolley jack on the grass and stored/moved the motor around on my old
billy cart (I was 16 at the time).
I have a pair of ramps, some axle stands and a small to medium trolley jack - will that do it? I still want to keep to the adage of trying to keep it
simple ie not doing stuff that isn't necessary but I'm yet to even find the time to degrease the engine and do some of the basics so living in hope
that this may happen.

Can you unbolt a panel at the back of the Kombi to roll it out? If not, you will need to get the back very high in the air in order to slide the
engine out. On mine, I had to buy extra-high axle stands (4wd style ones, rated to 4000kg) and use about 3 thick wooden blocks (sleeper offcuts) on
top of my jack to get the height.
If your ramps can get the back of the car about 700mm off the ground, then you should be fine.
The stands on the left are the regular pin-type ones, even on wooden blocks they weren't tall enough.
