yeah, good question... I've often wondered this myself... USA cars always seem to have sealed beams as standard... how did they do it, anyone?

There should be 2 tabs bent back at the 10 and 2 posistion inside your headlight bucket. these nned to be bent down. Try heating them otherwise they
may snap.
and use the normal bracket at teh base for the bottom mount and also the chrome ring.

you screw through the tabs, this holds them there. teh light is then adjusted using the 2 adjusting screws on each side.

i must be missing something, theres no way that you can screw these to anything, theres 3 raised bits on the outer edge at the bits that match up with
the tabs, but they point backwards, and theres still no hole in them, is there a bracket or something for them that goes between?

your talking about the h4 upgrades arent you. cause they just screw to the mounting tabs that are in the guards and you then adjust by the 2 screws
fitted

Umm, why do you want sealed beams. There are alot more powerful bulbs available in H4 globes. My buggy has 90/130w bulbs. Absolutely awesome at
night!
btw, the 4 super oscars help too

and the rim of the light, and yews i have them bent out all the way

i thought the h4 upgrades were a semi sealed beam. any way the ones i have in chaos have a stamped ring attached to the lens which is what attaches to
the tabs

Same here. they are semu sealed beams. as i understand it, a sealed beam unit, the whole glode and reflector are one unit and are replaced. Semi
sealed H4 lights are a std replacement and were used in early golfs etc. like barls said. the semi sealed beam unit, is in a pressed steel ring which
has the mounting and adjustment screws. this is then screwed into the tabs on the bucket. and a plain chrome dress ring goes over the top.

well i think i have dud lights or something then, the ones i have are almost all plastic, other than the bit the bulb actually sits in, and by the
description, these are semi-sealed, just without the steel rim with the screw holes and adjusting holes in it

found the solution to your problem mate its a narva part and the number is 72190. they are about 30-40 bucks and its designed to hold the lens that
you have. its amazing what you find when looking for parts in a catalogue. heres a pic and link to the right section

im a little confused and would appreciate some clarification.
so if i were to upgrade to semi-sealed units for my '71 bug, id need to remove everything, buy the mounting rings, then the semi-sealed units, the
globes and new dress ring? or is there anything that can be used again?
all i want to do is to be able to buy H4 globes that fit properly. the base ring on my reflectors are for the less common H4 type with a full ring
base (P45) , as opposed to the 3 tab type (P43t). does anyone know if you can buy new reflectors only with the P43t fitting? this way id only need to
replace the reflector and globes, as opposed to everything

no you can just buy the whole unit as ive done but make sure you get the mounting as well thats what 1st bug didnt do so that was why he was having
problems. micks has the h4 upgrades for the common h4 bases you just have to be specific when you ask for them. any problems and i can get you a set
thru my old man. the unit replaces the whole headlight assy. and is held in with 3 screws takes about 30 mins to fit so long as you have the tabs

also the main reason of doing it this way is that they dont offer a really good range of bulbs in the stock base. hence going to the h4 base.
