Whitewalls? Would like your opinion...

Hi all
I have the oppertunity to get a set of Atlas white wall inserts for my late notch for $100.
So i loaded up Type Three Selecta and a had looky-see..

What do you lot think of it? looks good? Does anyone have pics of late type 3's with full whitewalls on stock rims, just out of curiousity?
And is $100 a good price?

Thanks,
Josie

i got them on my 69 and think they look much better than normal tyres. will say though they dont fit exactly right on all the tyres and fade as they get older. Also if one comes off or gets warped your up for a 2nd set to match the others. Which happened to me.

I got some omega ones for $90 a set.

Dont get them they destroy your tyres. My atlas ones did anyway the edge rubbed into the sidewall all the way to the cord in 3,000 klms, The whitewalls are harder than the tyres. Get the paint ed ones they look great and dont ruin good tyers. AANd DONT rub the gutter they disintergrate. ( alas and all flappers.

I think they look good, but I can understand WalterMitty's concerns. Any chance of just getting the painted on version? If so, maybe buy these inserts then see what it looks like. If its really sweet then consider the painting or next set of tyres as real white walls?

Why would they eat away at the tire?? they rotate with the tire, so how could it wear it out?
And if they wear out the tire that fast, how could they still be in business?
Are you sure they were fitted correctly?

The tires are already getting a bit old, so i like the idea of the inserts becuase i could put them on new tires as well, or sell them later and get painted ones on the new tires.

*sigh*

I just don't know what to do!

I have just put them on my beetle they look great.
the manufacturers of the atlas ones recommend that tyre/rubber grease be used to avoid rubbing.
As the tyre touches the road it compresses in wall size, this is how the rubbing occurs, also the wider the tyre the more the rubbing
mine cost $135 so go for it

you either buy the flappers or get the strips etched and layed on using a latex solution... i had this done on my split.

They look great. Not period, but if you like it, you certainly wont offend anyone.
I've had sets on three cars now and the degree of rubbing seems to be dependant on the size of the tyres and the wheels you've got them on.. I've had one set that were no problem (165's on 5.5" rims), another that's a nightmare, (real hard 3" flappers) and... rears on the bug are ok but front 135's on 4.5" rims are eating away at the tyres. Mind you, I've only used tyres grease on the set that was OK. Silvers right, reading the instructions might help.
I reckon these wood look super fat. Real wide.Don't know anything about them, but love the look. 30's gangstar.

Jo
first of all, its your car not ours, so if you liek the idea go for it,
second, if the tyres are old, then what have you got to lose? you can see what its like for a minimal expense, have the inserts on a set of tyres that if (and I say if) they damage the sidewalls are you really going to be that upset as they are old tyres anyways,
Third, if you like the look and if they don't harm the tyres, sweet, but if they do hurt your tyres you can always plan to replace your old tyres with either whitewalls or have the new tyres painted prior to fitting
:)

i agree with penguin ^^^^^^^
if you like them put them on.. i will be putting a set of whitewalls on my oval. planning on using the thin type (i have been told there are two thicknesses) as i like the way they look.
Go for it.. its yours so do what YOU want. good luck

I've got both on my cars. Love the look of both too. The wide inserts look totally different to the thin painted on whitewalls. I installed my own inserts, simply by deflating the tyre completely and then fitting them, no grease, no probs..
