im guna save and get a porsche 914 or 928 just like wicked1 did with his v8, he said the conversion was no trouble too............. something to think about...

914 use a 915 box. It's not all that strong. It won't cope with lots of abuse either. The G50 might but it's very exy to begin with and parts are even more exy. The thing you need to remember is this, VW gearboxes have no place to give. In a chassis car the body and suspension takes some of the shock out of big clutch dumps, VWs don't have that luxury. Also, all the weight is over the rear wheels, so the gearbox is taking all that extra resistance of traction provided by rear engined weight distribution. My advice is this, get an albins gearset, but pump your tyres up to 40psi is you want to do burnouts. At least give the gearbox a fighting chance.

You might also like to talk to Kim Garland at Indian Automotive about what he does to keep his gearbox in one piece with a blown V6 driving it. He's only gone through one gearset and crown wheel in about 10 years, and he drives his very hard. To give you an idea, he only muched the gearset cause he was flatchanging it. :puke

kim at indian automotive quotes $5500...rancho has some interesting options too...i don't want to do burnouts but i do want to know if my 091 will cope with just the torque applied from a holden v6? oh well if it breaks i'll fix it...$5500 is not expensive compared to...well...what the hell else would i want to drive? :(

if you make a engine cradle similiar to porsche you,ll take some of the strain off the gear box get a locally built box unless you can guarantee whats coming out of the states.

as Pete said speak to Kimm he had had his for years now and gives it a thrashing every day. good luck

for your info guys the reason that old bus of Dougs got pulled apart was because it was a peice of $hit the picture shows a 10mm thick slab of bog that was over the wood thats right wood in the entire roof section, i don't know who done the conversion but they should be shot with a BB gun! there there is no way it would of passed engineering over here, it was a lost cause to rescue that car so i cut my losses.
cheers

I had hellbug quote me $6500 6 years ago for a very similar gearbox built by Shimo, so It's not as exy as you might think. And the thing is this, if you buy a Rancho and it breaks, your screwed. I mean how will you get them to honour any sort of waranty here on the other side of the world? I'd also suggest the Rancho might cost a similar amount by the time you paid the exchange rate, freight, import duties and everything else never mentioned. Indian on the other hand actually came up with the ratios for the V6 that Albins now sell. They've done a lot of those conversions and they know what works. One last thing, Rancho build boxes to a price, Kimm build boxes to a standard, BIG difference. You get what you pay for.

I'm pretty sure Aaron (quickcamper) runs albins gears in his 500HP 20B turbo wheelstanding kombi. If they survive that then they are pretty good.

Hey Ron,

I wasnt trying to be critical or anything, just letting the guys know if they were planning on asking you about how the bus drove with the 5 speed that you wouldnt be able to help them out. You did what you had to do, no bad. The bus had only had about 27 owners as it was anyways.

My current bug had a floorpan repair made with a chux rag and a thread tape roll under the bog. Amazing what you can find when you look.

Rancho will build boxes to any standard you desire and are willing to pay for. However, lots of people demand "Tell me what a box will cost me" (as in this thread!) and Rancho does list some prices on common combinations. Don't take this as an indication that the quoted boxes are the only ones they sell or that they produce an inferior product because they provide information that prospective customers demand.

I didn't say they were inferior, I said they build to a price. And my point was this. Kimm at Indian sets his price based on the standard of box he supplies. If Rancho were to supply this standard of box I doubt it would be cheaper than Indian.

The other thing is this. I have noticed, rightly or wrongly, that seems to be an attitude towards gearboxes in the US. They appear to be viewed in the hipo market as consumables. Something you use and abuse and throw away like coke cans. This is not the attitude that Indian has to gearboxes. Did you know Kimm is still using the same 091 casing he was 10 years ago? And this is in a 300hp plus street car that is driven hard everyday of the week. He builds boxes to last, not just a few burnouts, or a half season at the drags, but literally years of hard use.

If you can demostrate that Rancho can provide the same quality for a cheaper price and will honour a warranty from the other side of world with no stuffing around, I'd tell seagull to buy one straight away. Personally, I'd find it hard to see.

Sorry if I have offended you. :)

The custom made box I am working on is a custom built unit for a off roader class one with a Toyota V 8 .The unit is a 5 speed with a remote select & ( manual valve body ) has a 9 " diff assembly .

There has been one built but that was a full manual has a Vg30 turbo

Its getting costed now

1) main box from bar stock
0r investment cast
I have a factory in Tiwan that does gears , so I have asked them to price the gear cutting & heat treating .+ If they can do it at all .
will be a few weeks before prices come back

I had priced the subaru diff crown wheel & pinon that was US $3800.00 ( auto box ) RS TT
