71 bug
My old boy has a 71 bug that is need of lowering and a set of mags. I've been more a kombi man mostly so i'm not sure when it comes to bugs. I did a
search and found a few things but not to many... from memory this has a 4 x stud pattern and a spring front end... what is the best spring height to
buy to lower the front ( legal) and place to buy springs. I was thinking a 15" rim what ET etc do i need to look for, we were hoping to get somthing
in black like a BRM or empi???

If it has springs it is a super.
It will be a 3 bolt front end.
Rather than put shorter springs in you lower the spring cup
Have a look at this thread
http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=48798&page=1
As for wheels - that is a different matter
A stock wheel is 4.5" and "should" be 41ET - you need to check
A lot of wheels are more like 5.5" and 20ET
ie - they stick out
Play with this
http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp
A "good" offset is 6" and 36ET - that is what a Porsche cookie cutter is or a V Force Spider
The cookie is 5 bolt so you would need new drums and rotors
heep of 4 bolt wheels here
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/914_wheel_types/914_wheel_types.htm
But a 6" wheel needs a thin spring strut or hour glass springs
Also have a look at Topline

Cheers Bizarre. Is spring lowering any good? I wouldn't cut them just buy new shorten springs.

you would still need a shorter insert
I think you would find a modified strut is cheaper than new springs
Main thing is to pick the wheel you want and work around that
The way Helbus did it is your best bang for buck

sure it depends on what your after. barry and i both have vforce struts. 100% adjustable.
but it all depends on your budget. i had a set that had the cup moved down 30mm worked ok. you dont really want to go more than that without other
mods.

Sounds like the cup cut is the way to go. Anyone know of anywhwere that does this in the bris to sunnycoast area? then is it just a matter of winding
the back to suit if needed?

Unless you're planning on running big rims or tyres I would honestly just grab a pair of adjustable struts.
The VW online shop has them for $220 and you get new strut inserts with them, just fit your existing springs and upper strut tops.
If you get the cups welded and it's too low, shit happens...
but atleast adjustables you can tweak with the height afterwards.

no idea what postage would be but the springs are only $109 US
They are "suppose" to lower your bug between 3/4" - 1 1/2"
get the spiders and the springs and see how it looks

Typical, I pass them on ebay all the time when I'm searching for other stuff then can't find them when I'm looking specifically for them.
It may have possibly been Classic VW.
George has them on his site at same price

I got a set of those adjustable struts from Classic Veedub. $220. Set them to the just past half way and I'm happy with the way it looks. I'm sure
if you wanted to spend more money you would get a much better quality adjustable strut but these give you the look you want. Fitted Empi 8's to it
and had to cut the stud off the bottom of the ball joint to stop it scrubbing on the inner rim though.

Cheers Sbug 71, i'm going to go down that track as well. I'm thinking of maybe leaving stocko rims and get them powder coated black. I do like the
look of a fat set of rear tyres and was wondering how wide can i go on the back tyre wise. I talked to volks conversion and he said i can get them
widened to 6" on the rear rims.
So what do people think is the best/toughest look on 15"stokos widened or not??

I was going to go down the same track with the stock rims but a wheel widening person down here told me that they would have to be at least 8" wide
and cost a bit as well. Don't know if that is true but it was enough to make me buy new rims. I wanted to get 5.5" stockos on the back and leave the
standard ones on the front. The problem being that I could only get them in chrome and I didn't really want that. Also with the Empi's I got the
rear wheel bolts are too long and need to be cut down about 10-15mm so that they don't foul on the brake shoes.
Hope some of this info helps.

Sure does mate thanks for the heads up. I'm looking at some 4 stud BRM's, 4.5 for the front and 5.5 for the back. I'm not sure if anyone here is
rolling on these BRM's.
