hey
just wondering where people stick there radiators for water cooled conversions in type 4's?
i was thinking one day when i get around to doing it that i would either place it under the front beam and make up a scopp to run through the bumper etc or have it where the spare battery sits and make up a scoop for it? and ideas?
any suggestions?
cheers

You mean type4 as in VW914? Or do you mean late model Type2s (Kombi with type4 engine) with a water pumper conversion?

Fore the latter, I've seen a conversion where the front mounted spare tyre is actually a disguised radiator - from the front the only giveaway is that the centre of the circular "tyre cover" in in fact a wire mesh rather than solid. The actual radiator was (from memory) a standard Holden radiator. The spare has to sit inside with this option of course.

Kombi Kid - yes that's what I was asking - a real Type4 VW, or a late model type2 - which uses the type4 engine.
---------
Re the Type4 VWs in Aus - I saw one for the first time the other day - a VW912 (station wagon type) here in Adelaide.

It LOOKED VW but I didn't recognise it at first. Rather squarish in shape and the 4 doors gives it an "odd" look.
-----------

Re the Type2 radiator issue - how about a single radiator mounted behind the engine lid (with air slots/grill in the lid of course), mounted on flexible hoses so it lifts up with the door. A thermo electric fan and away you go! Or maybe just replace the dlid with a hinged radiator...might work.

Though I suppose it would depend on the LENGTH of the water pumper engine - a straight 4 might get rather close to the engine lid and have insufficient room behind it.

Or, as Matt mentioned, you could have two smaller radiators - mounted to the sides of the engine bay perhaps so they get airflow from the side air intakes.

Or two small ones mounted at a shallow angle either side of the gearbox. You might need angled louvres to direct air from under the vehicle up through the radiators, and you'd probably need an electric fan or two as well. This placement might get the radiators blocked with mud if you drive in dirty conditions a lot, but it would be a nice out-of-the-way position.

There is a huge selection of radiator sizes available these days, including those on large motorbikes - one of those each side might work well.

hey
the only probs with two small ones is if i run dual battery setup then it will get a little combusted in there.
i wont be doing and mud driving unless of road works strictly on-road.
so a holden radiator with a 16 inch thermo fan running above the gearbox on a slight angle with some scoops will be fine you reackon?

If I had a bus it would probably be as Baja Bus. I doubt I'd be running a water pumper but if I did above the tranny I think would be the way to go. I'd shroud it well and have a thermo fan pulling clean air from above the motor backwards down through the radator and over the tranny nose.

Haven't given it much thought but that what I'd do until a better idea get bantered around.

hey
have been talking with father and we came to the agreement of dual radiators where the batteries would normally go and moving the batteries inside in the back (hard to explain where) and using the air that comes down the wind catcher things??? and running thermo fans etc.
i dont think i will be doing the water cooled conversion for a whause im plimited by money etc (am only 15) so if i save for a few years etc i will have enough and then will do it.
i would like to thank everyone for there imput to this post
cheers

im currently running a large radiator behind the engine with twin fans. with most of the tinware removed around the engine it works real well.
