Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone in Oz sells narrowed bus beams? I have found
www.cbbvw.com but have had no answer from them. Is there any other websites I should look at? Thanks for any help,
Daniel
why do you need a narrowed bus beam ???

thanks pyr0,
I'll get in touch with them, getting one in from the states is going to cost a bomb.
Not sure if i am right but dont the Kombi beams bolt up hard against the chassis rails ....
how do you narrow one without moving the chassis rail.
Better have another look at a Kombi
Well give Kimm a call at Indian
if anyone knows how low can you go the Indians Know....
perhaps there another method ???
if u wanna go really really low and i mean this hits the hardcore catagory big time u have to cut out the under seat pannel and raise it so the wheel can get deeper into the car but that only the start of all the other mods that would have to follow.....

vw54, To narrow a kombi beam you have to make custom shock towers (end plates) out of thick plate metal. With these installed at either end of the torsion tubes, you end up with a 2in gap between the new shock towers and the chassis rails. Then it's a matter of narrowing the tubes to get rid of the gaps on each side. Some extra strengthening is required too.
pyr0, I don't want to cut up the bodywork on my bus, so won't be going that low with it, I still want it to be somewhat practical!
Just make sure you lower the bus, not it's bodywork....
Stay away from drop sills.
My $0.02 worth.
vw54- you cut off the old shock towers and mounting brackets, and make new ones out of 1/4 in steel plate.

German Folks,
That's the beam I'm looking at for my bus, just trying to sort out a good shipping company to get the costs down. Have you seen these beams in action? Do you reckon it's even worth the expense, or is it worth doing to keep the tyres from scraping?
Are there any negative effects with narrowing beams?
Daniel
It would be a hell of a lot cheaper to get dropped spindles.
If you want to keep it practical, then use the spindles, I have them on mine and am thinking of using 14inch wheels as if I use the stock ones they might rub on the underside of the floor.
If you wanted to go lower you would have to tub the front!
Nothing bad about narrowing the beam! YOur going to cut it anyway to put adjusters in there anyway! In fact, it will make the torsion arms tighter, so therefore a better ride! With dropped spinnies, it will not only ride as a stocker (but lower cause of the spidles) you will also have that COOL narrowed look! There was an article in one of the American Mags a few months ago, about the way Franklin do theirs!
N!
Yeah, that's where I got that 'loose' explaination about how to do it from. Is anyone in Oz running a narrowed beam? Would be interested in what they think about it.
Thanks, Daniel
Hey Daniel, the CBB bus Hamerd is running a narrowed beam. The beams are part of the Hamerd kit. Been available for about 5 years.
Give 'em a call on 02 4722 9313 or check out this link...

Hi
Just make sure you comply with your rego people. This is what the NSW RTA say,
[Where non original axle or suspension crossmember components are fitted, the offset of the wheel in relation to the axle or stub axle assembly used shall not be increased by more than 12.5mm each side
of the vehicle based on the specifications of the axle components used. If an axle assembly is shortened then the track width limit is taken as the axle manufacturers original track dimension, less the amount the assembly has been narrowed, plus 25mm. If you are contemplating fitting non original axle or
suspension components you should seek the guidance of an engineering signatory as an engineering
certificate will be required.]
Dave Stocker from LMS made a completly new narrow beam for his Ghia, seemed nicer that trying to cut & modify an old one.

Thanks for that info guys. Are the laws different for each state? There's a guy on another post saying how he's putting a 5in narrowed beam on his ride. If you get an engineering report are you able to go as narrow as you like?
Almost anything can be engineered!
The CBB beams are legal and any engineer will sign off on them.
As to the track/offset... same as any other mod - the 12.5 is for non engineerred/self approved. You can go heaps either way with an engineer approving the work.
End of the day, If your going to do all these mods to a car, who says that your not going to get an engineers report! I am! with a 5 in narrowed beam, custom shock/bag towers, and narrowed rear trailing arms, you basically need one! Dont be scared off by "having" to get an engineers report, If the work is done to a good standard, they will sign off on it!!!!
N!
Sweet, understand perfectly now!
I will definately be getting an engineers report, will be changing to disk brakes as well so will get everything checked out in one go. I'll have to put up some before and after pics, once I get my head round how to post pics!
Daniel
Hi
Before you do a thing speak to an engineer. If he dosent want to know about it talk to another. Your local rego people can tell you who they are. As far as I know the 25 mm track increase is non negotiable.

Increase of track? When narrowing its a decrease. And yes, you can narrow track as much as you want, as long as a Engineer is happy with the work.

daniel. the reason you havent heard back from mike at CBB, is probably because he he is just flat out at the moment. could be better to ring him.
my bus is at CBB now getting a narrowed front beam. cant wait. as it will allow more rim with clearance.
i have also their full disc brake kits front and rear. they are the best. keep trying him as his work is the best and all at a good price.

hey twoguns,
has he given you any idea of cost?
I'd love to run one in my next project :thumb
Most people seem normal, till you get to know them.

twoguns,
will probably get stuck into my front end in the new year. I am going with an IRS kit in the rear as well so will do one big overhaul. Let me know how you get on and what you think about your new front.
Can't wait to see some pics, I'll post some before and after pics when I start on my bus too.
