I've been going like hell trying to get my new 1641 in my splitty. I got it all in and running pretty well. The only problem is that the gear shifter has gone VERY tight. I can still move it but it is way too tight.

If I jack the back of the engine up (the back being the end closest to the back of the car), the gearstick goes back to it's old easy shifting self.

The only other thing I noticed was that when the clutch is operated, I can feel a bit of movement in the acccelerator pedal. I checked and they are not snagged on each other. I don't know if this is related or not.

I've checked all bolts and mounts and everything's fine. I even jacked up the gearbox and the shifter was still tight. THis must mean that the weight of the motor must be on the gearbox spline and therefore making the shifter tight.

I have to get the bus running by tommorrow morning so I can drive the 300k's to Brisbane for a show at Coomera on Sunday.

Any suggestions very appreciated.

You said you checked all the mounts, did you check the front gearbox mount?

Is the shifter rubbing in the chassis somewhere when the weight of the engine is lifting the front of the box up?

Sounds strange, I hope it is a simple fix for you. Good luck.

Have to agree with Dave, it sounds like gearbox mounts. Can't see it being simple, though.

Thanks guys. I've fixed it. It turns out that the new exhaust was pushing up on the bottom of the rear bumper which of course was putting weight on the rear of the engine pushing the front of the gearbox up and making gear change difficult.

I didn't think this would be possible, I thought the mounts would hold it in place. Apparently not. Once I got it all out of the way, it was all good.

I managed to make it to the show, had a great time and got a trophy for my efforts.

Thanks.

Ross.
