The reduction boxes on my splitty have been leaking on one side. I recently put new brake shoes in, and now they have been covered in gearbox oil!!

Can anyone tell me if this means they are now shot and need replacing, or if there is a way or process to clean them up and remove the oil so they can be used again?

Thanks

Steve

Sorry to say but replace is the best option. You can soak them, scrub them etc but the next time you get them good and hot................ no stoppee.......eek

Brake shoe material is porous. Oil soaks straight in like a sponge. You can clean the surface of the shoes all you like but you WON'T get the oil out of the material. Next time you have to brake hard and long (like in an emergency) the shoes get hot which forces some of the soaked oil out of the shoe and onto the surface... and suddenly your brakes are slippery as hell and you can't stop.

Replace them or die.

I'm going to replace them, but I thought what about sticking them in the oven until they are much hotter then cleaning them with brake fluid??? Only a thought not an intended solution

Mate i would wash them in Petrol then paint thinners or something similar... something that evapourates Dont think baking would do much.
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

I have baked a drive clutch on a variable speed milling machine contaminated with oil before with good results.
I would NOT recommend it for brakes though.
Something goes wrong on the mill and we loose a few hours production, if it goes wrong in your brakes, well.........

same thing happend to me, I held the shoes over the flame on a gas stove and the oil bled out, clean, bleed, clean, bleed, clean, bleed. takes ages. might be easier to buy a new set
