Rescuer or Robber???

Ok here's the deal. In Redland Bay here there has been a nice little early 60's pink and white bug that's been hooning around for a while. Three weeks ago roughly I noticed it on the side of the road with three people standing around looking at it. Normally I'd stop and see if they need any help even though I know bugger all, but I had to be at work. This was on a Sunday. On the Monday it was still there. Tuesday same. Wednesday still there...odd. Thursday and Friday too. On the Saturday some vandals had taken out the 1/4 glass windows and by the Wednesday every window had been smashed and there were dints in the roof. By this stage my Dad and I were convinced that it had been abandoned for what ever reason and we planned (yes we did have a plan😀) to go rescue it. Early Friday morning at 5:00am we went out in the ute to save the bug only to find that someone had flogged what used to be a sports steering wheel. So we went back home and took the one off the newest bug... 5:30am we finally started to tow it home with my Dad driving the bug and my Mum towing (by the way my Dad had lots of practice being towed in a bug when we towed my baja all the way from Warwick home, the scariest part was going down Cunningham's Gap!) we managed to get it home. We put a tarp over it and left a sign asking for any info on the owner and if they could call us as we went on holidays down the coast for a week on the Saturday. Now I've got back today and there's no coppers yet but I have to start trying to find out who owns it and give them an offer for it. It still is registered till april 2004 too. So here's my question...were we rescuing the bug or were we stealing it?
