My Kombi heater doesn't work 🙁

The last owners took the pipes off from the fan at the back and I haven't had a chance to replace them yet.

Oh well, lucky I live on the coast and it's been nice and warm anyway 😉

Yeah I know about Kombi heaters... Driving through SA in Summer, 35+degrees outside - and that great little heater blasting away at over 50degrees! The cables are stuck, and I wasn't sure where they all went back then. Every now and then you'd get whacked in the face by a draft of air straight from the furnace! Our engine temp gauge is to put ones hand over the dash vents: if it actually hurts (like it did in the inland heat in summer - honest, you couldn't hold your hand over the vent for long without getting burnt!), then she's quite hot. Hasn't been like that for ages. I know that's a dodgy temp gauge, but it's the best I've got right now.

Driving barefoot, you also need to look out for the hot-air pipe going up at the front of the bus. That gets really hot!

The heaters are still permanently stuck on, but that's deliberate now: winter in Melb. When it's cold, I find that only the front area heats up: behind the front seats, it's another world altogether. Passengers are advised to bring warm clothing. Anyone know how to get more air out of the vents under the walkthrough section (the ones that go to the passenger area)? I am thinking about putting in another fan in the pipes there somewhere.

I do love those kombis.

Cheers,
Aurel

What!!! They have heaters? I haven't been able to get sufficient heat out of mine since I bought it 6 year ago. Too many draughts in the old girl to make a difference anyway.

Mine works a treat, although I lost part of the pipe to the rear floor duct last time I was on the beach in Qld and haven't bothered replacing it; I just folded the end of the cardboard tube over so my heat wasn't being lost outside. It still cranks out just as much heat, it just doesn't direct any to the rear any more. I don't care, I don't sit in the back!!

I can certainly relate to what aggri said about burning feet on the vertical pipe below the dashboard - I've done it several times. Mine gets hot enough that I can't hold my hand over the ducts, even when its freezing outside... I just have to wait until the ductwork has heated up. Give it half an hour on the highway, and I'm cooking!! I often drive around in winter with the heater on and the sunroof open!

aggri: check underneath that the carboard tube is diverting air to the duct in the floor at the back of the front seats, where the step is. Also check that the cable-operated valve is functioning correctly. You should get demister when the lever (2nd from right on my 75) is down, and front footwell/rear floor when the lever is up. The RH lever should give you heat when its down, none when its up. When the RH lever is completely down, it should switch on the booster fan, found mounted to the top of the engine bay....

Cool! I founf that site a couple of years ago when I didn't have a Kombi and thought it was good but didn't bookmark it. Now I have a Kombi I went looking for it again and couldn't find it. Now you've found it for me! Sweet timing.

Thanks for the Link. Checked it out and there were a lot of great tips. I'm not sure about the expanding foam though?

Thanks for the suggestions Kruizin', but my heating system is kinda awol. There's a pull-switch above and behind the drivers head that turns the aux' fan on - and I only just recently put that through a relay switched by ignition - I can now no longer leave the aux fan on after stopping the car! The heater cables are all stuck: I disconnected them from each end, and they slide reasonably well (I oiled them too). The levers move on their own. The heater flaps (after some coaxing) move on their own. But when the levers are hooked to the flaps via cables, the whole lot refuses to move in any way. So they're all disconnected except the foot heater vent flaps, they move nicely. All others, except the floor duct to the passenger area, are permanently open.

Doesn't really bother me. And nice link bus356. Thanks.

Cheers all. Aurel

Even with new cables in my kombi it's still an effort to get ithe heater lever moving. I read that someone sealed a funnel to the top of each heater cable after pulling them out from under the dash. They filled the funnel with oil and let it seep in. Apparently worked a treat and would be a lot easier than replacing the cables if they get stuck!

All the heating had been removed when I bought the twincab. You need to rug up if its cold and your cruising.

The midnight cruise to Valla was a bit chilly last year. Looks like another cool trip this time around to.
