as long as you do it on the very top of the tunnel it should be fine........ that is where you normally cut out to reconnect clutch cable.. not usually anything there....... just dont go over board withthe lenght of the screws

You do What!
you do not have to cut the tunnel to replace the clutch cable!. to do so would severely weaken the tunnel, and it will be dangerous in a smash.
and if a insurance guy was assessing the wreckage he would void your insurance
Just undo the pedal assy and its a piece of cake.......
So long as its not under the bonnet or below the back window in the dicky seat.... If there is a fire there You cannot get it....
Tunnel is the best place -- obtainable from either side....
Just make sure the drill bit only goes into the tunnel by no more than an inch or 25mm...
If it goes in too far You might hit the clutch cable..
Use short fat screws - self tappers.. no longer than 25mm or steel Rivets ...

after looking at the site and the cross section of the 63 bug's tunnel i think it would be quite easy to attach this way. so ill give it a go and hope that i dont screw it up (no pun intended)

No probs with fitting to the tunnel. When you fit the extinguisher make sure the top is facing the back of the car and the bottom is facing the front............................ so if you have an accident the extinguisher will not come flying out of the cradle.
Also mounted to the floor in front of the seat is a good spot.
Also check to see if you can remove it when your seat belt is fully tensioned, handy if you are stuck in your seat from a big crash, and the car is burning around you !!
You could use radiator/hose clamps (off a water-coolered car!) to attach it to the leading edge of your passenger seat. I've done that in my Holden. As long as there's a bit of frame you can access...Or in my VW, screwed the front edge of the seat slider/frame on the floor pan
