I am so excited. I just bought my first splitty. :thumb

It is a 1962 standard and I found it parked out the back of a house near where I was doing field work so I dropped in and made an offer which they have now accepted. The best bit is that it is near Broken Hill and has lived here all its life and so from what I can see it has absolutely NO rust (as opposed to my camper). Even better is that it has been owned since new by a lady artist who mostly used it to drive out of town to do paintings so the guy who now owns it recons that the 50k miles on the clock could be original. I took this with a grain of salt but the engine definately looks original and it seems to be in great condition.

It hasnt been driven since 96 but the motor turns over by hand she only stopped driving it because she got too old so hopefully not too much needed to get roadworthy.

Adding even more to the mystery of the bus is that it was supposedly used in Mad Max 2 but I dont remember seeing a splitty in the movie soi I will have to watch it again with the VW glasses on again.

Anyhow am trying to organise getting it home now. Will post some photos on Monday.

Well I thought I had bought it, since my last post the guy who was selling saw some bus on ebay that supposedly sold for $15k and so now he has pushed up his price (alot) 🙁

Can anyone help me out here. What would you guys pay for the bus I described above. The body is not rusty, even the battery tray is original. The only think I can find are some small bubbles under the left front light. The paint is really crappy though and all rubbers are perished. Please help me out. I really want this bus but I dont want to pay a crazy price for it.

I have to tell him if I want it this afternoon.

Thanks a lot
Tim

what was you gunna pay for it in the first place dude, what was the bus like on ebay, (i will have a look), if its real clean as you say 8 - 10 k for the originality will be about right, but yeh real cheap is always better, the same thing happened to me, i advertised in the trading post "wanted pre 67 split" got a call and went to have a look and the guy said on ebay they are 5k, but i still got it for 400$, was a sledge though (no suspention motor etc)

let him put it on ebay, you can bid for it that way, will he get 15k for it, the split market has slowed a hell of a lot..

What has he asked for it? It's really hard to judge what it's worth without seeing it.

Had you agreed to buy it and settled on a price or paid a deposit? If you had it's unfair of him to now bump up the price considering it's been sitting idle for 8 years.

Are there any bits missing???

how many windows?
bumpers all there?
the bit behind the seats cut out?
indicators and tail lights modified or missing?
dash buchered?
is it a van or bus with all its seats??
is it original??
wheel arches cut??
Paint may be crappy but is it original?

the more you say yes to these the better but more valuable.

tell him that u offered him a price and he accepted it and that is what you are willing to pay. tell him that you are a volksie kinda guy and thats how much it is worth......perhaps feed him some bullshite about it being a different model split and worth more because of some feature and thats why the one on ebay went for 15k but this one is worth less.

Thanks for the help guys. I cant see any chopping anywhere. Dash is original, panels not chopped, bench seat in front. There is some dodgy camper stuff in the back which can all be removed. Underneath all looks good too, no rusty ribs or anything. Paint is cracking and peeling pretty bad in places. No wobble in front wheels. Dont know what else to say.

Nothing missing that I can see. Bumpers etc all there. Has a 3/4 length rack too but I think maybe it is not factory. Welds dont look quite good enough.

It needs lots of work to make it beautiful but probably not much to make it roadworthy.

I offered 3k, as it will cost me a bit to transport. I think they want 5 now but I may get it for 4.

We had not settled the deal as he wanted to ask a mate if he should sell before shaking and it was that mate that told him to up the price.

I take it from what you guys have said 4K would still be pretty reasonable?

Thanks again
Tim

You just need to work out what it needs:
Rubbers: $1500
Body/paint: 5-8k easily
Interior retrim: $500-2,500 depending on seats/metrials.
Wheels/tyres: $500-$1,500
Mechanicals: Brakes: 500, engine reco: $2,500, gearbox rebuild $750 etc, etc.
If you add all that plus your purchase price and can justify it to yourself then it's not a bad price. If you can't, then just wait for another one. There's plenty out there.
Cheers

hey Rusty,
it's only worth as much as you are willing to pay for it.
If it's a price you are happy to pay, and it's what you want, go for it.
As with anything, it's only worth what someone is willing to pay. Take that $17m soccer ball for example.
Otherwise, that $4k woulg go a long way on the bus you already have to get it nice. 🙂

Just my $0.02 worth.
here's some grains of salt to take it with......................................................................

mate. i would say that if you could get it for 3k you are dong ok. 4k is about the limit i reckon. but it would have to have all the bits there, whether they are good or not. complete bus is easier to start with than one that you have to scrounge bits for. there are people still getting buys for a 1k. and even those are pretty good. it s always about being in the right place and time.
its easy for someone to say a bus could sell for xyz amount when restored. but not as easy as people think. although a restored bus is a price effective way of owning a split. most want to do it their way. hence fish's still here etc.

i got mine for 800bucks... but i reckon ive spent 30k. so think about waht it needs doing. decide a $$$ and go for it.

oh there is NO SUCH THING AS A RUST FREE SPLITTY!!!! even if its been out there for it s life. i can tell you it has sat in rain and been thru puddels. splits rot from the inside out. a nd although you cant see it yet, the rust is there. if you can see some bubbles then i can assure you there is more to come out yet.
good luck. hope you score one.

Go back and wave $3K folding under his nose. Offer $4k with a roadworthy. The ol' "bird in the hand."
Good luck. You'll never regret it.

If its as good as you say then its worth 4k and more...if it would only take a couple of days to get it roadworthy and you can drive it and fix it up as you go then its a bargain at 4k...people are no longer giving splits away, you have to pay for them but 4k isnt much for an old original split...

I know of a 58 & 59 11 window bus you could probably get for around the 4k mark plus some frieght expenses, but as 2guns said they have some rust but only a weekends work...some more for roadworthy and you have a cool original split.

Will be cheaper to buy already restored, but then you dont know if it was done right, you can do a lot to a 4k bus with 11k.

Thanks to all those who gave me advice on this one and sorry I didnt get back on line sooner but I got waylayed in the bush for a bit. I didnt buy it in the end. I was having problems organising shipping and also had a REAL close look at the bus when the price went up and you were right about the rust twoguns. My magnet did not stick to either of the sills and closer inspection revealed more bog than I originally thought was there. I was a bit dissapointed though because it is still a nice looking bus with a cool history.

I am selling my house at the moment and my wife said that when we do I can buy myself a nice restored splitty so until then....
