hey guys

i was just wondering if there is a particular style or "right" way to drive so that fuel consumption is lowered? coz i'm using a DAMN lot at the moment (almost $10 a day - and I'm a poor student)

i mean i'm waiting for a fuel cap to arrive so i dont have one at the mo, and I know that that will mean heaps will evaporate n stuff, but is there more i can do?

no fuel cap!?!?
eeeeehh!eeeeeeh!!!
eeeeehh!!
putting around will save fuel, but tuning the carby and engine will save more. I drive a full race engined fuelguzzler and I don't use 10 bucks a day unless I'm being silly. will probably be using about $30 @valla racing in half an hour 😉

do You keep Your engine tuned all the time?
Does the automatic choke work correctly?
Has someone fiddled with the carburetor, maybe it has the wrong jets in it.. Previous owner may have...

Every time You push down on the accelerator pedal, the accelerator pump in the carburetor, squirts EXTRA fuel into the engine, so You can go faster.. sooner...

Have You checked to make sure there isn't a leak somewhere ? $10 a day is a lot of fuel... approx 10 liters !

Check under the fuel tank ... it could be leaking under the tank onto the front of the chassis... its best to take a front wheel off to check...
and check where the fuel line comes out of the chassis - up under the car near the LH rear axle..
I think You have to have a leak somewhere...
its just too much fuel...

That is My stainless steel braided fuel line just above the axle, it then goes thru the metal plate into the engine bay.
check for a hole where it goes thru the metal... Lee

hi Lee

I've only been driving my kombi for three weeks (only just got it registered) so i haven't done any of those things coz i don't know how. I don't really have the guts to touch my engine much in case i do something wrong!
(and the only reason why i've been coming out with all these questions of late is because i'm driving and listening to the engine instead of staring at it in my backyard)

i don't know how to tune my engine or fiddle with my carbuerator (and if the previous owner did, it was over 18 months ago) or know if my choke is working correctly.

i'm getting the car serviced this week in prep for valla. are these things that they will check?

$10 a day is the absolute maximum i would be spending (and i am doing a fair amount of driving lately) and it may be a tad of an exaggeration too....

Maintain a constant speed for as long as you can. No hard accelaration or heavy braking. As Lee said when you press down on the accelorator the carb squirts fuel into the engine. If you maintain a contanstant speed and dont press on and off the pedal , fuel will be saved. You would notice that when you get the van up to the speed you want to cruise at, you are lowly lifting your foot off the pedal and it doesnt take much pressure on the pedal to maintain the speed. This it the best place for fuel economy.

that way you are there quicker and your motor is running for less time ,unless you take into account speeding fines ,crashes tyres wear motor blowing up etc

I suppose it would be reasonable to assume that if you don't have a manual choke, you have an auto (or no choke)! You can tell if it's working by taking the air filter off your carbie(s) and looking down the throat. When the engine is cold the choke butterfly (near the top) will be closed and you won't be able to see down the carbie. When the engine has warmed up the choke butterfly should fully open allowing you to see down the carbie to the throttle butterfly (near the bottom). Don't look down when the engine is running in case something comes back up!
