Once upon a time, Nellie, the HN, needed so desperately, some music. Her passengers often spent many trips to Melbourne, a good two hours, without a single note of music, other than her lovely exhaust note of course!

One day her owner, Jim, decided he would like to change this, but unlike his previous car, he didn't want to just cut into her or put unneccessary holes in her. He thought and he thought, and thought there must be a way of doing it without changing her standard looks.
Here's the picture girls and boys..

He talked to his close friends, Nathan, Anthony, David and Steven, and came to the conclusion that it could be done, with just a bit of 'adjusting'.
So Steven and Jim went about installing all the bits once they were all purchased, as Jim didn't want to drive 14 hours one way to Valla Beach without any music! Not to mention his fiancee Kate!! So he put an mp3 player into the glovebox, so when it was shut, no one would know..

Jim had another problem. He didn't want to cut the parcel shelf which is metal, nor did he want to cut the kickpanels in the rear, which were different to Beetle kickpanels, as they are completely solid steel sheet. Where to put the speakers into a scene like this?

Well, thankfully, Jim's friends helped him out, and together they conjoured the idea of putting the speakers into the picnic basket.. It was going to be a suitcase with the bottom cut out of it, but Jim's friend Anthony suggested the basket, as it could remain shut, and that he had one. From that time on, Steven installed the speakers, and put them in the car, and from that day on, everyone lived happily ever after..

Thanks guys. Yeah Damien, didn't want to bother with all that, and as well as that, I didn't want to completely loose my glovebox. You can see I still have like 1/3 of it.. Most of the fibreglass ones are central. I'll check the site out though, thanks man.

Do you have a CD stacker under the front bonnet...My son Simon suggested it today when I was saying I'd like to put a new system in Dr L....

Only a short distance to run wires in....🙂

Hmmm. but then an MP3 system would have endless hours of music😎

No, an mp3 player will hold roughly 700mb of mp3(music files) on a CD.. That is usually.. hmmm... well.. roughly between 150-250 songs..

In other words, more music on one data cd, than in a 10 stack cd stacker.

Secondly Jen, you'll notice the difference between your Beetle dash and your Type 3 dash. The Beetle guages and so on are accessable from under the bonnet, where as all the Type 3 ones are still inside the car, and up under the dash. Ultimately, you could put the stacker under the bonnet in the square, but it is different to doing it in the Beetle. Just FYI!!

Cool, thanks Jim

I was talking about the Type 3....His radio/tape player is pretty ordinary... It's so nice to drive around with good music happening

I'll see how I go singing to myself in Bel......SDomeone did suggest a 12 volt battery on the side under back seat to run a system on in her......and the thought does cross my mind a lot...

hmm. call me sinical. but i am not such a fan of the speaker in a basket idea. i give it 10 for creativity. however. it seems a little odd. two speakers right next to each other?

sorry. but nice car 🙂

Jim thats brilliant, i would of never ever thought of it. Youve opened up a whole nother level to keeping the car looking stock while giving it some more creature comforts.

top work, i'm always looking forward to your inovative ideas

Yeah its a sweet idea, there was a guy that had his speaker in an old coke esky i saw a while ago too. just another slant on the idea. Another member here has been doing this for years too. You can get the plastic glove box things that still allow a small amount of space next to the head unit Jim i am sure, have a look in the mags adverts.

Just tuck the wires under the seat when removed yeah ?

Nice job !
