:P:P This cracked me up ... I heard the best urban myths today:
(1) That the 'VW' emblem on the hub caps when travelling at high speed turn into a German Swaztika ....
(2) That Beetles are shaped that way becuase in the hilly terrain of Germany if they were heading down a hill and braked suddenly ... They would simply roll over and land back on their wheels causing no harm tho the occupants ..
What cr@p!:thumb
Go Noddy the Notch ~ One day the Oval will ride again
Yep its the truth
just like the Toyota sign when rotating on the wheel turns into the rising sun.
Heard that hubcap one when I was about 14 (18 years ago!!) Me and a still good mate experimented with the hubcaps of his old man's Beetle and concluded it was bollocks. Amazing how much time you have when you're 14 though.
Cheers
Steve
We used to tell people that it was the other way 'round - you spin a swastika and it turns into a VW symbol. Either way, of course it's bollocks.
Anyway here are a few other VW urban myths for you.
1. VWs are called 'dak daks' not because of the engine noise, but because WW2 Kubelwagens had the letters D-A-K painted on the doors - short for Deutsche Afrika Korps.
2. A VW prototype won the 1938 Nuremburg Rally.
3. VWs are airtight (and you have to open a window to close the door) thanks to WW2 gas chamber experiments with Jewish prisoners.
4. VWs always turn over by themselves when they go around corners, they always spin out in the wet and the petrol tank explodes in accidents.
5. VWs are made in Der Black Forest by der little elves. Nein. Wolfsburg is nowhere near the Black Forest, and Australian VWs were made in Melbourne.
one 3AW the afternoon talk back nut said the number plate plate, light and bumper of the realy early beetles were placed like that so it looked like hitler, the number plae being his moustache, lie his nose, split window his eyes etc...
and he swears its true !
even though they were designed before he had anything to do with them !
Wasn't hitler the instigator of the design process?
Actually, in a way: yes. While Porche had already proposed the idea of an affordable car for the masses (in those days only the rich and those with a business needs usually were able to afford cars,) Hitler was quite struck by the idea and his government contracted Porche to design a VolksWagen (people's car.) At this time Germany was suffering over the punishment administered by the "allies" for the 1WW and the Nazionale Socialitze (Nazi Party) were very popular and in power - Hitler was seen as a great visionary, with the depth of his madness not to become apparent until later...
Back on topic; I heard only last year the one about how VWs were designed to explode in year .... (OK, the guy's a real conspiracy nut.)
Also, how about that all VWs will float... ?
Hehe, those are funny 'legends'.
"because they are aircooled they don't overheat"
& my favourite (because I have a later model kombi)
"taking the engine out of them is easy! remove the bumper bar & four bolts & wheel them forward! "
Please, I need drivers side window regulator (winder mechanism) for my '54
I always hear about rolling over and catching fire... Thanks "The Craic"!
lmao yeh i believed that last one when i took my motor out LMAO it waasnt funny when i tyried it :P
Founding member of the C'town Rat-Pack
heard the hub cap one a lot... there was the same debate when the volkswagen emblem was put on AFL footballs...
heard a rumour that the seats are filled from the hair of jewish prisoners...(possibly true from bugs made during the war?)

i heard the floating in water one.. you can drive them down a stream.. but since they are pretty airtight with new door seals.. i dont see why not?

the only one I heard when I was younger, "that VW are a panel beaters night-mare, so don't buy one"...:duh OK then
just like 356's.. panel beaters HATE them!

Hi
I have heard this one many times "the shape of the bug came about after putting an ice block in a wind tunnel" I reckon you would end up with a puddle.

some guy told me once that if you have an accident in a kombi your feet get cut off
I don't know about your feet getting cut off but my Uncle had a headon in his Kombi many moons ago and if he hadn't of grabbed his wifes legs and swung them into the walk thru bit, they reckon she could of possibly lost her legs.
Well that's what they tell me anyway.
Maybe he should have been steering instead of touching up his wife's legs....

hehe aggri u've resurrected a few old threads recently 🙂
I think another myth is that the mag case will ignite when there is a fire. Apparently the heat u need would consume the whole body before the case could get hot enough to ignite. Also the case is a fair bit chunkier than a sparkler 🙂

What about, "VWs are reliable":o
Just kidding. Some of them are.:thumb
"Tell him 'We've already got one'"
they are so old you cant get
parts for them
-in a Beetle you just undo 4 bolts and pull the motor
out, takes about 5 mins.
-if you want to hot up a Beetle you just stick a
Porsche motor in it - it goes straight in.

i actually met someone the other day who didnt find out that her beetle's engine was in the back untill she broke down and tried to open the bonnet! (suffice to say she no longer owns a volkswagen)

I love it when people tell me that the engine is "in the boot". It's not in the boot, the "boot", what little there is in a beetle, is in the front.
yeh, I like the one about reliability! :thumb
There's the other one about "beetles have good fuel economy!" hmmm not really... unless its downhill with a tailwind and a 36HP engine
...and Robert's ya father's brother...
closer to 30-45 minutes with disconnecting everything
