While crossing in 2000 I met 2 guys in a type 3. No spares or tools. One of the air hoses had gone terminal and they got pissed when we couldnt help them out. The hoses they had were made from tin foil and tape. Dudes. They drove off anyway.

My nephew went across twice in a splittie a few years ago with no problems. It was in the cooler months.

I know of a pair of guys who did it in a manx, back in the 80's.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

Well, it's just a road, and it's just a car. Of course it will make it. Get an oil temp guage though, and drive early in the morning when it's cooler. There's now lots of traffic along that road so not too much to worry about...

Couldnt agree more Bill

I did it back in the early 80's - t'was like Parramatta Road
I think the longest stretch between servos was like 110km's
We even saw 2 guys with sheets wrapped around their heads walking across. Turns out the sheets were for wind protection - other wise they end up with bad wind burn.

My biggest regret is not riding my pushie across there - hitched instead.

West coast was more of a worry. Pt Headland to Broome (Roebuck actually) was 604kms with only one servo. Dunno if any more have popped up
Fitroy Falls to Halls Creek was unsealed then too.

A oil temp and pressure would be a real good idea though

Just dont think you can cruise all day at 130km in a loaded car into a head wind on a 35 degree day

The Sandfire road house is the one between Port Hedland and Broome, and the petrol is the most expensive I've ever bought. You have to get it there or you won't make the distance. Now there's a monopoly... My best mate from school rode the nullabor on his push bike by himself. he put a book on his handlebars and read most of the way. At least you wont run into a tree...

yeah - did the same. Hold the book with ya thumbs while riding. Did 3 16hr days while riding. Bloody long day.

I was hitching when we went to Sandfire. Petrol was 30c at the time in sydney and 65c there!

We didnt fill up 🙁

Almost made it.
The blokes had a couple of litres of 2 stroke and i had a litre of metho for my stove.
In it went.
Ran like a pig but we limped home 😀

Ahhh... those were the days!

hehehe... the previous owners of my '63 bug did it with the old 1200. Seems to have survived 🙂

How do concentrate on controlling a bike and not crash into something whilst trying to read? 😀

I was sitting in the sandfire in the car and this family of 7 or so Aborigines rolled in in an old holden, 3 of them pushing it. Turns out there was no engine in the car. They just lived in it and used it as a big billy cart!

hahah it wouldnt be a loaded car. if the car were to cross it would be with 1 or 2 other cars. one being an f100 and another an eb s-pac falcon. so i would hide all my gear in their cars 😀. and just be 1 or 2 people and my car driving. lol

I went across on the bike (BMW boxer 1980 model) this time last year, It was bloody cold! and the crosswinds were a bitch, I wore one side of the tyres more than the other just from having to lean in to it! Fuel prices were well over a dollar a litre. I cant see why you could not do it in a Beetle. But you would have to watch out for the trucks, Road trains and B doubles, I have seen then doing the ton on that stretch and when they go past the blow you into the weeds!
