*$2 clears throat* ok time for a more serious post! lol.

I have been having probs wif a rich mixture, my car as you all know is a bit of a heinz special, and I have what I believe to be a holden carbi... in a quiet moment of sanity today, i thought i would give it yet another poke and prod, whilst no gnomes came out, i did notice the little bit at the back i had forgotten about..... what is it, it obviously has something to do with the throttle as it closes when accellorator is pressed down,, pops up (open) when at idle......

if you know what it is, how do i adjust it, it appears to be adjustable? and what does it do????

thanks for taking the time to read this... as you would have gathered I am not afraid to ask the silly questions....

but this carbi is driving me nutzzzzzzzz! lol 😀

it is a stromberg possibly off a 173 or 186 motor. there is a venturi reducer avalible, a range of main jet sizes and a variable size main jet which works like a mixture screw in to the bottom of the main jet to reduce the size. check that the choke butterfly is straight up and down when in the off position

I would think they would be a bit rich when on a 1600 VW Engine... since they were originally made for a larger 6 cylinder engine.. One of the locals in the next town runs twin strombergs in His 1641cc Beetle... Hes probably rich too...

as someone said, just make sure the choke flap is straight up & down when the engine is hot.... If the choke flap is partially closed, the fuel / air mixture will really be RICH...
Did You go to Valla??
cheers

i certainly was at valla.lol. met heaps of lovely peeps and saw many a well loved vw!

I am glad (sort of ) to know it is possibly off a 6 cylinder engine, I discovered earlier in year the secret of the choke flap (there is a post floating around ) i was in a panic as it was revving uncontrolably after some offroading,, took a while but I worked that one out,,, (not even the carbi guy or a mechanic friend picked it up!lol). I was just wondering about the fact that no matter how much I fiddled I can't get it to run lean. It's pretty gutsy and runs ok, but it uses more petrol than the webber...(yes i will eventually change over but first have to get an adaptor for the air filter hose).... so thank you for the input.

now I really am curious as to what the vent thing does? if it opens on idle.. is it to let more air in,, or excess fumes out????? All i can see it's good for is letting dirt into the system???.lol

yup thanx barls..... googlioogled it... ahhh, so it helps prevent vapourlock at high temps (apparently a good thing when rockclimbing in ur truck, due to extensive periods of slow speed, thus lower air flow.. 😀)?? lol helps regulate the petrol flow at idle, 😀 hmmm I see! yay I am happy now, will sleep easy tonight..hehehe

Sorry I missed You at Valla...
I couldn't really see a BAJA that looked like Your Avatar..
I did see one with an oil cooler stuck up on the back with hoses that looked like they were ready to be replaced...
looked like they may have been leaking... near the cooler...

Maybe next time...

My Son bought Me a New Weber carby for My Beetle today..
at a swap meet.... I hope it fits... and I hope the air cleaner fits too... My Son runs a Holley Bugspray Carby, which runs really rich, buts goes like nothing else... unreal... but does use a lot of Fuel... compared to a standard 1500 engine...

i`d rather play with a homemade vw for hours than a rubicks cube,:thumb
btw youll probably find that carb is off of a middle 70`s holden kingswood or torana as earlier ones didnt have the vent so its probably jetted for a 202 or 173 and to change main jets you need a special tube spanner to go through the brass screw under the fuel bowl (know this from experience) ex holden tinkerer:cussing

😀 that WAS festy.lol. the avatar was really small so all the dirty grot stains and yukkie bits were not obvious... yeah the hoses are reaching the end, only about 6 yrs or more old.lol. running out of length to chop off. The back has been off a fair few times this year, so the perished hoses are not so flexible anymore. lol. he is a crusty beast but he does a lot of miles and enjoys the odd spot of mudbombing!

who knows by the next valla he may have undergone a few changes.. 😉

thanx pod,, cool, not the bloody kingswood... or even better a torana moitttee!lol

so will i have to take the carbi off to adjust the jets? and which way do i turn them? and how much...lol I just need it a tiny bit leaner, the exhaust is too black and It just doesn't feel quite right.... (peeps keep looking at me funny as i have turned into an OCD mixture screw fiddler and exhaust sniffer!).

tic....tic....tic...DING....:duh ohhh I get it.. so chances are i will have to take jets out and buy new, smaller jets...and a special tube spanner... ummm.. tired... fused brain... and perhaps i should just buy adapter for webber...lol

:duh ..... will...look...at..it..more.closely..tomor..zzzzzzzz....plonk*$2 falls out of chair, exhausted by all this thinking n' sturf*.lol

years ago in the more boofier headed part of VW tuning some people figured sticking a stromberg on a beetle would inprove performance. Sure the on/off throttle progression when poorly linked to the throttle cable gave the impression of incredible amounts of HP when trying to drive delicately in traffic, but any real performance gains where in the head of the beholder.

Funnily at the same time in history the holden boys had figured out the VW solex was a far superior carb as it was much more adjustable and had a dedicated idle circuit, and hence were fitting them to their holdens.

The stromberg is also built using traditional holden technology of making it out of cast iron, such that the stromberg weighs an incredible amount for it's small size, and works fantastically well as a paper weight in cyclonic conditions.

My advice would be to convince someone the stromberg is the performance carb, and then give them a great deal by offering to swap your performance stromberg for their stock solex. You'll be far happier.

:cry i know it's poo wes,, don't have to rub it in.lol I just wanted to finally work out what it was and what the little vent thing did!

I have been progressivley sticking all the fallie offie bits and replacing broken thingies on mah ride...(progress becomes somewhat hindered when one certain thickheaded owner decides she will take it off nice, perfectly good roads to bash the hell out of it on bumpy surfaces...)...anyhoo, I am currently on the neverending circle of repair, and keep running into other things before i reach the carbi. i think festy is having a go at me... 😉

The previous owner was a holden mechanic, and 'happened to have one sitting round'... bit like the air filter!

*drama queen squeal*'holden......eeeewww yuukkk,, gotta get that revolting holden bit out of there asap!'lol :blah

:duh I am not impressed with it as it has been nothing but trouble.lol. Just have to allow for the downtime, every time I plan to swap it, something crop up. *sigh* every day is a new adventure in ms fixit's world!:puke

this one... it's covered in dust and grot, but just want an adaptor for the hose (re; above photos). What do you call them? hose adaptors??lol. I want to keep festy's doodle, he wouldn't be the same without it, how would having a bigger air filter affect this carbi?

Hey $2, another site I frequent often is www.oldholden.com as my Bedford van has a holden engine... they have a tops forum there and heaps of people that will have a crack at helping you with your carby problems if it is indeed a Holden Carby...

Hey they helped me convert my lazy bedford 186 red motor to a smooth running 3.3L Black EFI...

Good luck..

thanx marineboy. I will have a look. I don't intend keeping the setup for too much longer though, but this thread has been a good one for anyone else who happens to encounter a stromberg carbi like this. i figured i will just get some kind of adaptor for hose and change to the webber rather than muck around with jets etc for now. But I won't go doing as wes suggested, offloading it onto someone else,, thats mean.lol. (plus vw karma would mean my engine would blow up or something due to excessive dishonesty!) 😉
