My 73 microbus .It stalled at the bottom of the driveway and caught fire on trying to restart it.
I have replaced it with a 79 bus now and I regularly check all the fuel hose fittings and take a good whiff as I pass the air vents to check I can’t smell fuel.
I have also moved the fuel filter and fuel pump out of the engine bay.

Nooooooooooo!
Would a fire extinguisher have caught it in time? Or did it go forth and multiply too fast?

Thats a fire and a half..... a fire extinguisher might have helped at the start but it would take a bloody lot of water to put that fire out....
an Inferno...
I double hose clamp everything ...
Moving the fuel pump & filter out of the engine bay is a good move.... do You have a switch to switch the fuel pump off??

I ran up the hill to get a fire extinguisher and when I got back down the hill it was too intense to get close enough. And I remembered it had half a tank of fuel.
Hi
Bad luck, at least your around to talk about it. I’ve tried to put out a few car fires that I have seen while driving along, the little fire extinguishers are almost useless.

the best drug is the vee dub drug
That is some fire!!! :jesus
So glad no one got hurt......
Don't let that put you off. It only happens very rarely with Dub's. It's usually the owners who start setting fires, 'cause they're so DAMN SEXY!
So you reckon that the little extinguisher's are useless?
Fire extinghuishers aint Useless...
I just got one for my manx yesterday... $25 (Ask Me Where if you want, With bracket and a Good Brand...! U2U ME)
Have had one in my Bedford for ages and it just may have saved a guys life who was stuck in a crashed ute that caught fire.....
It happens SO QUICK so have it handy not under mounds of S#!T....
I have mine in the same place in my cars and work car, infront of my (Driver) seat on the floor... Out of the way but close at hand...
You would be amazed how well they work, on a small Engine bay live a bug or kombi they will Decimate a fire...
Get one, Money says you will use it if nothing else you will in the Kitchen or on your First born girl's first boyfriend... He He He...
Been there, (As the Boyfriend that is...):cussing
holy shizen thats a big fire. i always keep my little fire extinguisher in my baja in front of the passenger seat or on the back seat untill i mount it to the tunnel. hopefully i will never have to use it.....i just replaced my fuel lines and made sure everything was clamped for this reason. the line where it comes out of the tunnel to the fuel pump wasnt clamped when i bought it:o

Thats one crazy fire. It brings back memories of when my T3 Ute got fire bombed in my front yard. I feel your pain. Did the insurance pukes pay out?:cry:beer:party:cry:repuke
Yeek, where in mullum are you?
I Now carry a 1KG powder extinguisher in the car. I was still getting used to the 73 when it went up I had only had it a few weeks. As for the insurance ...........There was a little clause I didn't read in the back about vehicles older than 25 years not being covered in the event of a fire ( I had choosen the cheepest insurance I could find, Leson learned). I got over that.
My 79 is correctly insured now.
I live between Mullum and Byron closer to Mullum.
Double clamps are a good idea! I will do that .
A fire extinguisher's the first thing I bought after buying my first bus. I just hope I never need to use it.
Egad thats a nasty fire!
Note to self must buy fire extinguisher soon...

Thats one hell of a fire.....
I had a fire extinguisher in one of my old Baja bugs, and was hassled my some friends of my parents for having it there. They borrowed my car and had the back seat full, I'd never used the back seat before so never had any problems, but when I got home the fire extinguisher was empty and the inside of my bug was completely covered in white powder, the back seat shorted out the battery and went up in flames.....never even got a "sorry"

Fire extinqhishers are a must. Last week on my travels after vala, we had an incident that could have been dangerous. We could smell something and stopped to see what, there were flames at rear near exhaust. It turned out to be a sock that had dropped out of the back prob been there a while tucked under rear guard, anyway found its way onto exhaust and was causing electics to trailer plug to catch as well. Lucky we smelt it all this so close to engine bay etc. No damage

Hi
I carry 2 in my work truck, both very easy to get at and Im trained in their use. Maybe the cars were to far gone by the time I got to them. If your going to save a car you have to act quickly.
This fire is a reminder to check you fuel hoses often and make sure that your battery terminals are not going to touch anything. The biggest problem with an air cooled VW is that the fuel from a leak can pool on the tinware and when it gets ignited it really goes up.
