Morning all,

Not a specific VW link as such, but I need to motoring help from Melbournites.

My missus has to drive to Melbourne in a couple of weeks for work purposes, and is scared stiff of doing it. They won't send her any other way, and I can't get the time off work to accompany her.

The problem lies in the fact that she hasn't been to Melbourne before, in fact the closest she has been is Wangaratta (where we bought our bugs). She doesn't take to driving in new places and definately only enjoys this as a passenger. So......

She needs to get to East Burwood. What I am hoping someone can do is send me some directions for the easiest possible way to do this. Definately not going through town, I'd be looking for freeways, turnoff, etc....the least amount the better. Fuel and time are not an issue (work paying) so if she needs to follow a freeway or main road for an extra 30 mins or so to make it easier then so be it.

All suggestions appreciated....thanks heaps.

Kinda tricky without going through town. The Hume Hwy comes in from the North... Burwood is in the middle of the Eastern suburbs. Coming from the Airport to the Eastern suburbs is really easy now with CityLink (and the airport is kinda in that northern direction, but also out west). There's a big road called the Burwood Highway that goes through the Burwood area.

Perhaps it would be possible to come from the North-East, ie - via Lilydale, over the Black Spur? Along the Maroondah Highway all the way to Springy Road, then down to Burwood East (along said Springvale Road). Not sure exactly. This might be a significant detour up near Eildon, but there are very few places you could get lost.

Or come down the Melba Highway instead (avoids Eildon detour and joins up with the Maroonday Highway just near Lilydale). Yeah that's better. Avoids the city anyway.

Oh gee, I don't know, I stick to the South-East really.

Melways is the standard city street directory.

Good luck.
I love hook turns! (Don't worry, they're only in the city itself (I think), unless you're a cyclist, and then you can do them at most intersections with lights!)

Regards,
Aurel

yeh, perhaps take the M31/Hume Hwy to Seymour, then turn onto the B340/Goulburn Valley Hwy, then right into the B300/Melba Hwy just after Yea. Folow that all the way until you hit Maroondah Hwy, then turn right towards Lilydale. Then follow that for a while and yo can turn left at any main hwy to get to Burwood Hwy. I'd suggest Springvale Rd if its not peak-hour, otherwise, take Balckburn Rd or Middleborough Rd - and that'll take to th heart of Burwood East pretty much...

it'll be a nice drive through the outter outter easten 'burbs too!

hope this helps and that your wife wont end up driving to Phillip Island...

Travelmate took her on a course through the middle of town, which she wants to avoid. Also I want to get the least amount of direction changes, as she'll be by herself we don't want to make her keep stopping every 10 minutes to read the next direction.

We'll just see how she goes....maybe I'll just give her the list of stuff as above and leave her to it!

If she comes down the Hume and turns right onto the western ring roadat Campbelfield , that will take her in the direction of the city and over the Bolte bridge. If she keeps to the left and keeps an aye out for the City turnoff from the western ring road and the South Eastern Suburbs from the Bolte bridge she will be sweet.
After the bolte bridge she will go Under the Yarra Via the tunnel and onto the South Eastern Freeway. After that she can leave the freeway at any of the exits from Toorak road down to Blackburn Rd (I think).

Using that route she will go from Campbelfield to pretty much east burwood with no lights or right hand turns and plenty of signs to assist her. It is a big loop around the city and I use it to get home all the time...easy peasy

u2u me with where she need to get to and I will look it up and tell you which exit is the closest to her destination.

You will need to get a day pass from citylink which you can get up to 2 days after you use the tollway.

Hope that helps.
David

I find the Western Ring Road a bit freaky...and I love driving and do it in peak hour traffic all the time...It's not well signed and if you don't know hwere you're going or turning...and the truck sream along there!!!!

Don't know what others thing

I go the Hume...then turn at Seymour...to Yea....Melba Highway from Yea to Yarra Glen...Lilydale....

I'm just after Lilydale.......know the way to Burwood.....When would she be driving in roughly? If it's a day I'm not working them maybe I can escort her through...I've done it before when country relies visit and they feel a little nervous on our roads...

Well I figured if she was big enough to get from wagga to Melb on her own she could handle the freeway.

Sounds like she's a bit of a nervous...and doesn't know the place or driven in a big city...

Someone escorting her to where she has to go is possibly a good answer to the problem.....I can do it if I have the day off work or if on a weekend....

Thanks for all the advice above from you all, there's a whole lot to consider there.

As for timings, I believe she'd be hitting Melbourne in the afternoon, probably late arvo. Escort is a possibility.

As for driving in a city, we've spent a majority of our lives in Brisbane and she was fine there. But a whole new city - and being alone - with no navigator - is the major problem, hence my request. Wagga is only our temporary home, 18 months currently, who knows how much longer?

She was told this arvo that they might have some other people to share the trip with her so now we're waiting to see whats going on there....if all goes well she might not only have navigators but maybe someone who has been there before!

Again, thanks to all, I've printed all of this off and will see how this 'passenger' situation pans out.

HAve a great weekend!
