AT least you are looking on the right side of Brisbane.
Depends where you nee dto be close to, if its the city Manly or Cleveland is pretty good. $4-500,000 should get you something pretty decent, just not waterfront. might even get some acreage.
I'm sure you'll get replies from people saying either Northside or Southside is crap.....there is a real territorial thing going on here, I've lived both Northside & Southside and they are both good. As for seaside places there are a few on the Northside, Sandgate, Redcliffe etc, but there is more on the Southside, Wynnum , Manly, Wellingpoint, Vic Point, Cleveland Etc.

:o If the wife reads this I am a dead man. I dont necessarily mean a waterfront property, just a seaside suburb, something with a seabreeze. And a nice big snow plow. To sweep off all the right hand lane huggers that you have up there. A week on queensland roads is enough to drive me nuts.

amazer. been a brissie man all me life. if you were to move here, what would you want in a suburb?? are you ancient?? asian?? funky?? do you like the quiet life or the busy life?? for my two cents the best seaside suburb is redcliffe (approx 50 mins drive to the city on a weekday) as its the closest REALISTIC swimming beach to the city. by that i mean no mangroves or mud flats. i'm talkin yellow sand, boardwalks, reefs etc. its protected by moreton island so the waves are never over 50 cm, even that is in cyclone season!!! haha. great for the kids and a great family environment. from there it is only 30 minutes north to the beautiful sunshine coast and bigger waves (not as commercialised as the gold coast by far.....) and misty mountains abundant with waterfalls. keep goin and you head butt noosa, go a little further and you hit the beaches in the 4wd and island jump... thats my one eyed redcliffe upbringing view anyway. i currently live close to the city on the southside of brisbane. its good for my busy life and only a $15 cab ride for nights on the piss with the boys, but the worst parts by far of the southside are Traffic congestion, Population density and Lack of trees. to me the southside is just sprawling suburbia with housing development after housing development. as a result no trees and higher temperatures in summer. the coastal suburbs arent so bad but if you work in the city then be prepared to pay the cost in public transport of fuel as it is an aboslute rat race sometimes with what seems like endless traffic lights....phew... time to go waste my net hours elsewhere, any questions then buzz em on in. will be too glad to help if you're interested....we always need another blue to bash at origin time eh? haha

I second the Redcliffe vote. I lived there from 1972 to 2000. Grew up in Scarborough on the north end of Redcliffe. If you work in Bris you get on the Hornibrook bridge going home and leave it all behind. A much more relaxed lifestyle there. I'm doing the same thing here with Central Coast/Sydney but the pace is a lot different.
Iam a southside boy. Live in a little cove of forest on the southside. Have bushland all around and only 10mins from the city if that (non peak hour) and $15 cab ride home.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!
Go hard or go home!!!!

I'm a funky old asian guy. I've been to redcliffe. been to noosa too (love the topless sunbathing.. but i'm no perv, honest)
I'm not a real fan of the beach, dont like sand. Just need it for the seabreeze. Too old to party so dont need nightclubs. The ideal suburb is the one away from riff raff. If I can go for 1 month without someone having a full on 2am domestic up and down the street I would be a lot happier than where I am now. I dont really need to know who is the biggest slut in town. If I didnt have to be involved in the the all night euchre game across the street, knowing who played what card when, who is a @#$% #@$# reneger. Can put my bins out the night before and wake up to find them still there, not kicked over or burnt out. An older suburb with not too many kids, and the houses have back yards. One where you can leave the car out front and when you wake up you have a better than even chance of it still being there in the same condition you left it. As a bonus, a suburb where its legal to shoot the next door neighbours cat and dog would be sweet as.
Thats why I cant live in Sydney, no way can I afford that place.

there are good spots both north and south. But also depends on how close to the city you wish to be. Another good option is redlands, down south of manly etc. could get a nice semi rural lot. or i knwo of alot of developments going in down there, with a rural feel. (well thats the way i designed them)
i reackon go somewhere from manly south. the futher south, the more rural.

yay chris move to the sunshine state and experience life where people SMILE ALL THE TIME!!!! we might not be as cutting edge as sydney or melbourne, but i reckon we make up for it by being laid-back with a "who gives a f__K attitude" yay!
the champenge is not on ice yet........but i reckon you'll be fine as long as you dont move to Kallangur!!! (heheheh, is that where your wife's sister is living? somewhere way northside anyway -- not that theres anything wrong with the norhtside mind you, i grew up there and i turned out ok...i think....)
anyway, real estate has finally caught on up here as a "dinner party" topic and the prices have risen heaps in the past couple of years, but still no where near as full on a "boom" as down south.
check out the websites for ray white, lj hooker etc etc -- good friends of mine just bought a place in Cooparoo (not seaside, southside about 10ks from the city maybe?) for 300 000, and they found it on the net.........
yeah man redcliffe is the go for serenity and sea breeze's, never stops blowin... dont know about pet hunting though.....well you are a funky old asian guy??!! haha am sure i'll get grilled by someone for my "obscene" comment.........
