Here is a Beetle on a Kubelwagen chassis...

the wide tyres have been added , lights weren't blacked out
and there was only one wiper.. for the driver...

When the British took over after the War, there were only Kubelwagen chassis available, so they were used... plus
they used any bits they could find as the Factory, which was just about blown to bits by bombs from allied planes...
How they made one car is beyond Me...

imagine having one of those beauties....

The first b/w photo is a KDF body fitted to a kubel pan but with schwim running gear. Note the fats and smaller rims. This unit was ordered by the SS and only a few were made, known as the type 87. This unit featured a fold-out table for the passenger, rag top, 4wd in 1st and reverse only and an under dash machine gun holder. Beats the hell out of a bud vase!

The colour pic is an example of the type 82e of which around 670 to 680 where made, 16" rims and kubel running gear.

There was also a type 92 which was the SS body stlye fitted to a kubel pan and running gear.

When the pommies "liberated" the Wolfsberg plant they did indeed produce many KDF units but the 1946 unit had a roller fitted to the front instead of bumpers. Kubels were produced and sort after by both the Brits and Yanks.
