Hi Guys,
I have found an earlier type Squareback (pre-69) and it is registered as a 1969, however I think it might be a different year because:
(1) It doesnt have the chrome strip at the front of the bonnet, and it doesnt appear to have been removed
(2) It has the wide indicator lenses (not the circular ones)
Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the 1969 Squarebacks had the chrome strip at the front and the circular indicators. If so, what range of years could this squareback fall into. Also, how hard are the chrome strips to find and how expensive roughly?
Another query I have is, how difficult is it to convert from an Auto to a manual. I know the originality etc is important but I would prefer a manual, and if the conversion doesnt involve cutting and hacking etc, then it can always be reverted to an auto if I hang onto the box, transmission etc.
Any info would be greatly appreciated guy. Many thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Steve
69 type 3's have an irs rear end and front dic brakes as far as I know. This is probably the most certain way of telling what year it is apart from the chassis no., which will tell you exactly when it was built.
If it is indeed a 69 auto it is a rare model and as such I would not convert it to manual, it is worth alot more as an auto. You would be better off buying a car with an original MT
Ain't nothin' like the wind in your hair.
More than likely a 1969 as that was about when the lights changed. The 1970 model was the square shape.Try Midlife crisis he has strips.
Indicators on a 69 have the wrap around style, and the chrome on the bonnet was not there on squarebacks....
N! PS kep it auto, I have a 69 auto notch....I miss that thing. It drove real nice.
*if this is the squareback in morthern Melbourne, I WANT IT AS WELL* LOL
There was a chrome accessory stip that went on the front edge of the bonnet?
I know this Sqback has it but not sure if this pic shows it well...but posting it...we'll see
Can't see it real well...
Nectar...did you Notch have one as well?
I love that pic Jen. My notch had the strip, and from what I beleive, it wasnt even an option on the squarebacks. Im prolly wrong, but From what I know, they never came from factory with the Moustach.....Even thought I would put one on if I ever got a square....
N!
The Sqback belongs to a guy in Melbourne.....The car was his mothers and kept in mint condition...He inherited it and bought it back here last year...
It had a couple of nice little extra's...and I'd never seen or noticed the moustach before...Very nice!!!
Thanks to everyone for their replies!
Unity-28, it is the car in Northern Melbourne and I have bought it. Sorry for the bad news mate. Cant wait to collect it though (about 2-3 weeks) Will try to post pics when i finally get the thing.
Decided also that it will remain as an auto. Always loved manuals, but the auto factor will appeal to my mrs!
Cheers,
Steve
So was it the moustach that you were asking about Steve?
My 69 square is original one owner and he bought it with the moustache on the front.
I have found this site helpful.....🙂
but I have no idea if it's 100% right:P
...nice Type 3 62deluxe....the moustache's look excellent
...you don't see many...they must be fairly rare?
Mine's the 1600L model with the twin carbs. I think the base model may have missed out on the moustache and the side trim and it only had a single carb. :duh
My '70 Sqback has twin carbies.....and side chrome trims...but no moustach...it might have been pre '70 that had them? :cry
My '69 notch has wrap around front blinkers, irs, and front discs also has the long style reflector dorgans at the back.
Must admit I don't know a lot about the other type3's as i'm a type3 newbie.
Wow kombidog.......you sound an authority on these!!! 😎
.......thinking on it I think the moustache would look silly on the square nose of the 70 > Type 3's...it suits the rounded nose well
....I've been trying to understand those numbers (well for the beetle)...they are meant to tell you what accessories....special extras/editions...colour & interior....if you can decipher it....
There must be a list of Type 3 codes for things like pop outs...moustaches....type of indicator...colour combo...?
This sort of explains what I'm tlaking about
http://home.clara.net/hallvw/dating.htm
There is a thing called an M plate...M #'s are extra's and special features a model or batch of VW's had
The S # is for Special Edition VW's....e.g. Love Bug..for Type 1's
Here's an example of Type 2 'M plate'
http://www.type2.com/m-codes/
If you could read your M plate...then you'd know if something was an included extra on your ride...
I just wish I could read it!!:jesus
There seems to be a real shortage of information on the M plate....especially Type 3's
If we had these production numbers...like numbers for features there'd be so much less guessing about whether something was original on a ride or not...

No Dramas mate. I saw it in the trader on Thursday, And Almost called, but The lack of space and time (which is why I sold the notch in the first place!) made me put the phone back down....Hope all goes well....PS what colour is it?
N!

Thanks again people,
Jenz58, it was mainly the moustache i was asking about, but also the possibilty of converting from auto to manual, but with the influence of this forum I will leave it auto!
Unity-28, the colour is light blue...dont know if it's original. The car inspection was very quick and I didnt get a chance to check the ID plates etc, but the car has been resprayed. I will most likely repaint it in it's original colour.
Anyway, I'm glad my post created some discussion! Thanks for everyones input, and I will show some pics ASAP.
Cheers,
Steve
