Just thought I'd stick my head in and say hi, 😀 Never realised Australia had such a happening VW scene til I read the article in this months Volksworld (UK edition) about the Sydney VW Nationals, some pretty nice cars there!
Anyway, as you can tell from my signature I'm not a local! (I've got an Aunt who lives on Pacific Highway in Sydney so I don't feel totally alien!) I live in a small town called Lurgan about 25 miles from Belfast and drive a 1970 1500 Beetle as a daily get about. I've also got a 1956 Swedish Oval project that's needing a load of TLC (and heater channels and interior and paint..) but that's another story. The local club is the Northern Beetle Owners Club (see link in signature) and it's the only one, there are around 120 members although there are a lot more dub owners around.
Well that's it, just thought I'd be polite and introduce myself! good luck guys, keep up the good work building those dubs :thumb

Welcome to Australia's largest gathering of Volkswagen fanatics....
We never hear anything about BUgs from Northern Ireland..
usually Bombs.... not the ones You drive either...
although I haven't heard much lately....
I hope things are quietning down over there.... maybe they have already...
I love the two UK VW Magazines.... much better than the US ones... actually the magazine I liked the most..... died....
I just drool over the "for sales" over that way.... although when rust is mentioned in the UK... it can get scarey.... same as parts of the US.... Sometimes there is 1/4 of the car gone missin' including things like shock towers... I've been into VWs since 1964 in Australia and I've never seen a shock tower that has disappeared into thin air... My Son is 'making' an oval beetle at the moment - the body had been sitting ON the ground under a tree for years so there was some rust in the bottom of the heater channels... but the rest of the body was OK... You MUST have a full time job just stopping the rust.... anyway... welcome to Down Under...

Hey guys, thanks for the welcome! Yep things aren't too bad round here on the bombs and bullets front and rust is a big problem! One minute you're poking at a tiny rust bubble next minute you're replacing half the side of the car! this was one of last winters running repairs..

Here's my oval as it stands, it's pretty solid although the bit where the heater channels meet the rear wheel arch is just fresh air! that will be rectified when I get round to it, the new heater channels are in the garage already.

Just spent all afternoon sorting out my rusty piles of good parts from my rusty piles of crap :thumb, yep, rust everywhere! still it's mostly sorted now, finding bits of cars I never even owned in the bottom of boxes, beats me! The kids are a great help (!) running off with stuff and hiding it etc.. One of my mates is convinced I'll find a split screen camper in my garden if I look hard enough!
Yeah the kids are 4 & 5 and a half, one of each, the boy being the eldest, they're good fun most of the time and they love the Beetle (mainly because they can bounce around in the back with no belts on) hopefully I'll have the Oval done before he's old enough to drive...
I think basically the registration thing is to deter would be thieves forming a shopping list, there's been a spate of 'steal to order' thefts in the UK over the past couple of years, it would be easy for anyone to spot a decent motor and figure out where it was or turn up at a run and try something (last year on the mainland a very nice black Oval was stolen overnight from beside the owners tent after picking up a 1st place in a major concours event, it was never found. I think it's out the frighteners on most people so I think the guy who runs the website has done that just to try and safeguard peoples cars in some small way. sorry for the hassle, I wasn't aware of it (he probably told me and I've forgotton!)

Meant to say, that is very nice, not really into 'modern' colours on ovals, but that really looks the business, yours I take it?

OMG...that's terrible about the oval getting stolen....🙁

There was similar talk around here after an event recently...well about people targeting events who obviously know what they are nicking off peoples rides....

It was the first time I'd heard a discusion about it, so it is relatively new here....no talk of a complete ride going... :jesus

Welcome from me as well Irish. Unfortunately we haven't got a Guinness thing so this will have to do!:beer

As far as welcoming foriegners, well I don't know what the percentage is but there is a HUGE amount of Australians (including me) who claim Irish heritage I personally hope mine is the convict ancestry as well. Although the furthest I can go back is to the gold rush in Victoria. (mid 19th century) I think not too successful in that game though.

You may well be our first Irish member. We may need to add to the title of our forum so as not to appear Xenophobic eh?

Turlough only 1 post since April..

....looks like maybe you've been going into the 'buy swap and sell' sections where they get rid of old/out of date threads and you loose posts.... I stay out of these areas as much as possible or make sure I have enough brownie points that a couple lost isn't noticed 😀

Well I do a lot of chit chatting....:blah:blah:blah

Pete must admit I did notice a new UK member shortly after you arrived here....

It's alright mate, the english have already drag'd them selfs over here, myself i ran from the uk a few years back and been smiling ever since. The best thing about the dub scene over here is the fact they mainly have little to no rust WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO no more replacing the bottom 6 inch's and all the floors and sills etc for me. I was a member of the WolfsburgWeedHuggers on the southcoast of england when i was there and still have a lot of contact with the SussexVolkswagenOwnersClub. .. keep on dubbing
