just going to ask some of u vintage nerds - what are the correct blinkers for a '60 beetle? bullet ones on top of the fenders or did they have no blinkers at all (so the right ones would be the same as the early split bus?)

thanks
Jon

apparently some early '60s had semaphores... i've been told mine had em but original owner ripped them out 🙁 I have bullets on the fendars... but you'll see a few different set ups (ie. lights on bumper bars etc.)

I am no expert but I think that they only had the semaphores

they had semiphores.

the first front blinkers were on top of the guards and they are narrow and sit 30 mm or so from the beading, they had clear lens although Orange lens came out later

does your 60 have the bump fule tank and a reserve lever ??? or do you have the later flat 40hp type tank with a reserve
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

You sure? I thought 59 was the last of the semaphores, pretty sure actually.
There are two 60 models in our club and both have the narrow bullet style indicators on the guards and the italian spec tail-lights which had indicators and no semaphores.
All the books i have also say 59 is the last semaphore model and the last 36hp model, could be a late 59 that was sold in 60?

well i got semaphores, hump fuel tank, reserve lever and no holes in the fender for blinkers (dont know if they are the originals). But the doors have push button handles, dont know if they are the original doors though? They looked like they might have been removed in the past because some of the screw heads were rounded a bit.

There is no chassis plate on the body either.

I thought 1960 was the last year for semaphores? and i was under the impression that if a car had semaphores it didnt have blinkers? If it had semaphores what kind of blinker switch should it have?

thanks guys so far

If u have semaphores then u dont have blinkers.

The switch is the same as an Oval type have a sheet strap around the steering coloum.

The door handles changed before the blinkers did, u have the bump tank so no problems.
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

I have a '60 (not yet running), and went through this about 5 months ago, asking what was correct on my bug and what was an add-on.

I have the holes for semaphores (trafficators), but they are covered with Euro-style pillar lights, which are broken anyway. Previous owners of my '60 have added amber indicators to the front arch (late bug style) and the mid-60's tail / brake / indicator lenses to the rear. But I do know that at least my '60 (year confirmed off the plates and relevant references) had semaphores at one time. My daughter (who will own the car in a few years) wants me to put semaphores back in....not easy to find! I talked to a guy here a few months back about buying the Euro lights from him and will look for him in a few months.

I was also asked about the door handles - push button are apparently correct, which I have, with the key lock only in the drivers side. Haven't looked at the others as the car is on the other side of town and I don't get to see it much (sigh).....

Che Castro, I'd love to see some pics of your '60 so I can get an idea of how mine will look in a few months.....

my '60 has the same set up as yours phantom... cept I think the holes for the semaphores were filled in ... my bug was bought in April 1960 ....a site i've read said semaphores were replaced with the clear lensed bullet indicators on the fenders and the special italy and australian rear lenses in November.
