Hey Dubbaz,
Where does one draw the line? What are your opinions on this subject?
Especially with the early model VW's.

probably restore if at all possible considering rust and $$$ most importantly.
I'm more a fan of just removing rust and leaving it in its original factory paint (if its still there). I don't really like factory perfect restorations, they have less personality.

I would personally restore anything, as long as I liked it. I've been hanging onto my type 3's for over two years in the hope that I would find myself in a position to restore them, but they are preventing me from doing anything in the shed at all - there's just not enough room! They are going to the tip this weekend. 🙁 Maybe then I can get stuck into some other restorations that I have waiting.:thumb
I need to get a coat of paint on my kombi, then do some suspension work on Heather's '68 bug, then finally I may get around to doing my '66 International 4x4 panel van. It's been buried in the shed for four years. 🙁 It will take a long time, but when I'm done I should be ready to do some serious VW restorations. No doubt my kombi will be in serious need by then!

It is such a broad subject that it actually is what makes the restoration scene what it is.
The fact that different people have different opinions is how we get cars or parts suitable for restorations.
If NONE were wrecked, then it would be near impossible to restore any.
If NONE were restored, then there would be no need to wreck.
So I suppose there is a balance there somewhere, but as different area's (England compared to say Mexico) and different people have different needs, it keeps it all happening
Wreck or Resto really does depend on the state of the VW and probably the age. Lots of bits for early beetles, Karmans, T3's and Kombis are getting really hard to find and expensive. The full works on a pre 60's VW can cost a fortune and if you are not planning on keeping it forever , could be financial suicide.
I'm like Che, not a great fan of flawless resto's. A few scratches and wear and signs of use adds a lot of character to an old vehicle. . I'd rather just repair to keep em on the road as opposed to restore. Less heartache if anything happens to it too.
It's like the how long is a piece of string bit.
Very few complete cars are beyond salvage, but you have to ask yourself a few questions.
Is this in my skill level?
Can I afford to pay someone else if the 1st answer is no?
Will it be worth what I spend?
The type of car comes into it.
If I found a beetle in the same condition as my country buggy, I'd have left it where it was.
Well my friends are gone & my hair is grey, I ache in the places where I used to play.
Same as spook,If its rare its worth it if its not to rare you have to weigh up ya options.
If it still resembles a VW I say restore it.......
But only if its what you want
65 Meyers Manx
68 Country Buggy (KO 367)
68 Country Buggy (KO 669)
68 Country Buggy (KO 789)
68 Country Buggy (KO 815)
68 Baja Bug
76 Baja Kombi Twincab
Yeah 11CAB, I agree. But... if you decide to let it go, let others know so that someone who WILL want a challenge can have a shot.🙂
....hmmm, restore if ya got the cash, but...
