Just recieved my "Windows XP 64-Bit Edition for 64-Bit Extended Systems CD" Didnt come from the US either, it came from Deutschland. Now the big question is...
do I risk upsetting a stable WIN2K environment by installing a beta XP64????

Not on your life! I have seen many M$ Beta efforts, god knows what nasties lie inside.

No. Remember when bill gates was doing a media presentation for Win95 or 97 and it crashed on him - on national television. HAhahahahhahhahahhahahahhahahahahahahahah. Ooops. there goes a Gazillion dollars!
that was 98 and i remember it well he was laughed at for months

what a knobby.
Win98 crashed, and 98% of people upgraded to it anyway.
The other 2% stayed with Mac.

And wasn't ME just a great piece of work.
dont know. I went from C64->win3.1->win98->win2k and depending on how many drinks I have, XP64. I'm surprised that since they have this 'partnership' with Intel, they have released anything yet. Its forcing people to go athlon.

Well.... I did it. I installed it onto a spare drive. It sucks. It didnt crash (not in the hour I used it) but there arent any drivers out there for my hardware. Consequently, it doesnt recognise the SATA HD and the graphics are jerky. I tried the regular XP drivers but no good. So I guess I just wait some more.

typical M$ B.S.... hey guys, weve got this new operating system out which is super fast and extremely stable and will turn your computer into the meanest mofo youve ever seen, but we havent gotten around to supporting your hardware yet.
soooo... if you give us some money, well, lots of money, we can set about our best programmers to write you some drivers for your hardware! yeah... that'll fix 'em!
i bet the reason that microshaft dont have any problems with their computers, is because they use macintosh but just dont tell anyone😀

this made alot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.
Hahahaha - good one Bugster!
BTW - I'd install it, that is if Bill Gates was PAYING me lot's of money to do it! Isn't that what you're supposed to do? Test a product before you put it on the market? Make the thing bulletproof?
But then, the world is full of gullible Beta testers, who will take over that side of the business. Cool! Fire 200 people Gatesy! You don't need them anymore!!! Off to the IT junkheap boys and girls! Those degree's aren't worth using for toilet paper.
And I think to myself - what a wonderful World! (for poisonous Man hating multinationals that is).
BTW anyone seen "The Company" yet?
Still seems to be too many bugs with it ... I would install it on a seperate machine to my working environment, why risk it! You know there are going to be problems with either programs you use, or drivers you have, so I would test it, or read what other folks have had problems with.

Have to say Mac is far better than Billy Gates S&*^T but we got a Dos box because that is what the schools were using. Really was a down grade in computers.

hey... i wouldnt say DOS is a downgrade, ive had some of my best computing experiences on DOS.
at least it always works, and doesnt do anything you dont tell it to do!
windoze is a mistake... really. an upgrade to windows is just another way of saying "this will make my computer crash faster"

i remember back when i was young,(8 ish) playing with sun micro stations and unix. Those were the days (89), only thing, can't remember a single command 🙁 . But it took a while to get windows based system up to the same speed as the micro stations, i think they were still being used into 95, only since about 97 were the windows systems any good.
I do remember a good story my father told me about buying his first computer back in 1982 for $80,000 in partnership with other people in the industry, it was used in qld to produce some of the first cad drawings for australia, (to the best of their knowledge). and how a 1mb upgrade of memeory came on a daughter board!!!!! :alien

I used my free version of WinXp 64 for about 4 months or so and only ended up removing it because there isnt a program available to mount ISO's for win64. It was although great. If a program was 64bit it ran noticably faster. In terms of drivers u have to find them. I just searched in google and found a great forum that people where using for it. The only thing i didnt get working was a program to mount cds, nothing else didnt work (the reason it didnt work is that virtual cd programs put in a virtual driver..so it needs to be 64bit) For games it was a little slow too, but that was prolly due to beta ati video drivers...may be fixed now.
I would install on to a seperate HD or partition so u can change between the 2. If u are not a very computer sorta person i wouldnt bother 🙂
Yeah thats what I did. I transferred all my things onto the one HD (did have things across 2 drives, one from my old system) and installed win 64 on the other so I can boot from either. I couldnt find the drivers for SATA or ati when I looked so I gave up. It was a very short experiment for me. If I were to get ADSL I would be happy with the speeds I have... for a while... so the 2000 is OK for now at least. Besides, it took me 3 days to download the service packs, dont want to waste it :P
Is it true that the only reason mac has survived is from cash injections from MS? MS needs a competitor to stop it from falling victim to more anti monopoly lawsuits?

Nope. Macs survive because for some people it's a religion but also because for some things - video, media etc they are far better.
MS cash come from ensuring that it can make products for Mac.
more likely the second there mate. but if apple had of marketed right back in the early days they would be alot bigger than they are now. but they are making a comeback and will eventually take over *insert evil laugh here*

one thing i would recommend is getting the drivers before install. I found myself needing the internet to download drivers when i needed a network card driver. not happy jan! I think i ended up having to burn it to a cd on another computer
also apple live off i-pods and art peoples
