The firewall can be switched off. If you get the service pack from the professional and system admin part of the windows site rather than the windowsupdate you can download the whole pack rather than the smarty-pants install as it sees fit version Micro$oft think people want.

Then when you install you get a few options. Boot it up without being connected to the web and switch off the firewall.

Don't be discouraged, I've installed it on 14 computers so far and no hassles on any. My only advice to anyone going to do the upgrade is potentially there can be a number of incompatibilty issues so read, read and read some more on the notes they provide and any current magazine articles and forums on the matter.

A good starting point is here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

Whatever you do, don't just go ahead and install it thinking that nothing can go wrong!

Wait a little while longer, until all the bugs in the service pack have been removed. Then give it a go.
SP2, has worked fine for me.

the m/s tech guy seemed to think my antivirus (trend) was not yet compatible with sp2 and was conflicting with it, i may take silvers advice and wait a while before i reinstall it and compleatly remove the antivirus program, interesting topic, and hearing some/most have had no problems eh, thanks guys

switch to AVG from Girsoft (anti virus) its free and updates are released daily. I've tried just about everything and this has always proved to be the best 🙂

Volksfolks, at work we recently switched to Trend. Mic. for antivirus. No issues so far with SP2 that I'm aware of. Trend does automatically turn on it's own firewall though which we turn off.

SP2 causes crashes with jpeg image files, particuarly any in the My Documents folders. there's 58mb patch out for it now. I'm not touching SP2 until Microsoft has finished beta testing it (oh, you realise that with their error reporting function, we are all now beta-testers?)
If it aint broke,
Make it go faster!!

Also had SP2 problems. Network card mainly. SP1 is fine. No need for anything more.
