Hi all,
I had a 1972 Type II camper in the UK which I had to sell to move to Oz. So now I've got some cash together and I'm going to buy another.
I'm going to check out a '74 with an 1800 engine tomorrow. I know the 1800 was only around for a few years before going on to the 2l. Are there any problems I should know about? Will I be OK sourcing parts? Any tips?
Thanks for looking.
P.S. first post
Hi and welcome to the forum!!
Great to see you want a Kombi again :-).
1800 motors are very common here in Oz, my guess the most common bay window motor.
No specific issues with them as they are a great motor, but all type 4's are prone to valve issues if over loaded/over heated. 1800 heads have the larges valves of all type 4 motors, so maybe marginally more suseptable to this problem, but not sure. Don't let that turn you away from them though.
As for re-building if you need to, they are more expensive than type 1's but a better motor for a Kombi. You can easily convert it to a 2L at re-build time if you like.
Oh, just for your info, the great guy's at Volkswest were very helpfull to me when I was in Perth recently, and worth a visit :-).
