ahhh, the joys of wireless... and the crap you have to go thru to get it working.

i assume that is what you are talking about.

if so, are there any metallic objects/walls/phones/appliances or other computers between you and the aerial?

I thought there slogan was "No Wires No Wait No Worries"!! Doh!!

On a positive note though, I did some work for a guy at Parramatta last week and he had just got the Unwired service because he was renting in a block of flats. He is very happy with the service and no complaints yet.

guys, call me stupid (i probably am!)
but what exactly is "unwired"?
is it like some huge wireless network or something?

Checkout http://www.unwired.com.au for details. Basically it's a broadband interent service that doens't use a coax connection (like cable modem), nor does it use phone lines (like ADSL), it is wireless, hence the name. When you sign up they provide a wireless modem which can hook into your computer via USB or ethernet ports. My understanding is that there transmission devices have been setup on current mobile phone towers. At the moment the service is only being offered in Sydney. Hope this sheds some light 🙂

I have a sister-in-law at Port Macquarie who is using the wireless broadband system...
She says its great...
They do live on a hill too..
a bit of elevation works..
its a bit like anything else using Ultra High Frequency signals,
its line of sight.... No sight .. No signal...

so why did the Australian Government make many TV channels switch to UHF years ago... VHF is much better...
If there were NO trees or large buildings etc etc etc.. it would be perfect.. but We do not live in a perfect world...

My Son who has an ISP in the country, is having problems trying to use broadband wireless from the ISP building to His house which is within walking distance but there are those darn trees again...

anyone have a sharp axe?? 🙂🙂

The main difference between the Unwired service and other wireless services you may hear about is that you can theoretically get coverage over most of the Sydney area with the same modem (it is a true Wireless Wide Area Network (WAN)). That is, not just in range of a provider down the street but hypothetically you could be using the service at you house in one part of Sydney, pack up the equipment and drive to work over the other side of Sydney and use the same service there, then go to mates place somwhere else in Sydney and still get the access etc etc etc. Well that's the theory anyway. As 56ovaltine has mentioned however, it's not always rosy for everyone everywhere.

i see, so its basically a big wifi...
theoretically it should work really well, were it not for all the interference causing buildings/trees/washing machines/computers etc etc etc.
