As I am totally ignorant about these new fangled computer thingies.
What is an I pod,
I know it stores music but how do you get the tracks on it.
Can you fit it to your car and can you amplifiy the sound???
Can you run good speakers etc, just like a normal car stereo.( at least I didnt call it a wireless),
Cheers
Dave

An iPod is a MP3 player.

You acquire music via various sources. What i use is the iPod software called iTunes. I save all my pre bought cd's on the iPod with this software.

Being technically legal - there was a bit in the paper the other day about this and i THOUGHT it was ok if you bought the original software that you were allowed to copy it.
Apparently this is the case overseas but NOT in Australia.
Apple also have a shop where you can buy music but it is illegal / not available to buy from the USA shop. This shop is not available in australia?????

WTF???? it is all too stupid and i do what i do.

As for in car - you get an attatchment that turn the iPod into a FM tuner and you tune your car radio into this.

I reckon this is brilliant as this gives you a sh!tload of CDs without ever taking your CDs into the car again.

Some say the quality isnt as high but in my case, i think that is REALLY splitting hairs. It is not a sound studio in my car - i just want convienience.

In MY opinion the iPod is the best value (15gig for $440) The mini is only $50 cheaper and is 5gig and misses out on a few features and the 20 and 40 are just TOO big.

We have loaded HEAPS on there are are only just in double figures % wise in filling it.

In a nut shell - for my requirement (and yours by the quick sound of things) they are brilliant!!

Thanks. The reason I was thinking of one is that I dont want to spoil the dash of my bus by cutting a hole for a stereo and if I put it under the dash you can still see it.
The only other place would be under the seat but I would have to stop and get out to change a CD, and I would need one with a remote on a wire as it wouldnt be in line of site to work.

Can you attach the Ipod to an amp to get it loud??
and also can you attach it to normal car speakers and sub's

Also I think Ipod is the Apple one, what will work with a normal PC.
Told You I was Ignorant about these things.

No you tune it in to the FM radio in your car - just like the drive in.

You get a REALLY good FM radio and set one of the stations to your iPod FM "station" and listen through that.

You just have the iPod sitting on the seat beside you

Could you fit one of these in a hidden space and leave it set on the iPod FM signal and turn it on remotely?? ie just a power wire to turn it on??

You then use the iPod to control the volume?

The iPod has a headphone jack. Now this might not give you the same quality as RCA or optical audio outs, but I mean really, you'd have to be picky to even notice a difference if you were listening for it. Especially in a car.

So you could hook the headphone jack to the "sound in" of the amplifier. Might need a few small cable adapters. The amp obviously can hide somewhere, and then you could have the iPod sitting near you somewhere, and just unplug it when you leave the car, and take it with you.

I hope this is right, I've not actually tried it with an iPod.

To get music onto the iPod:
* put your music CD into a computer which has iTunes software on it and a USB or firewire port (to plug the iPod into). Most "modern" computers should have the USB port.
* with the iTunes software, convert the CD to MP3 format. This copies the sound data to the hard disk in the computer, and compresses it so you can store more.
* then when you plug in the iPod you should be able to transfer the compressed mp3 files from your computer to the iPod device. I'm not sure about the exact procedure in iTunes, since I haven't got an iPod. It can't be hard, iTunes is Apple software.

Cheers,
(corrections welcome)
Aurel.

What is a good one to get, is the iPod only for Apple users.

Aurel

just a few things

iPods CAN work with USB - but not very well.

Firewire is the preferred way, but as a PC person i use USB2. MUCH better than USB but not quite as fast as fire wire.

As for getting it off itunes and onto the iPod it is easy - every time you plug your iPod into your computer it automatically updates it.

An album in 20 secs with USB2, about 5 secs with fire wire and a minute or 2 with USB

No not only apple

We have on on our 700 Hz IBM

Just need a USB2 card for $30 or a fire wire card for $80

As i said - to me the pick is the 15 gig version.
I doubt you will fill it and is much better than the new mini.
They really stripped it for the $50 you save

just incase u wanted to use the ipod at home as well without having to stuff around with all the cords... you can use the same attachment as the one u use to listen to it in the car to listen to it at home on your stereo.

handy if you need to listen to 21 days of music without changing a cd 😀
in the beginning, the universe was created.
this made alot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.

Oh yeah, and the iPod can also act as an external hard disk. I'm not sure about how this works with PC's, but it's great with a mac, on firewire.

You can take all your stuff with you to any firewire-equipped computer (mac at least). If that's any use. Depends really doesn't it. Backups maybe? Might be irrelevant. Anyone done this sort of thing with a PC?

(Thanks for the info blue74l, too).

thinking of doing the same thing... I don't have a ipod but a different brand mp3 player (shop around...some are cheaper with more space and better sound qaulity) really enjoy mine and its good to use as a backup for other files...

guess I just need to find a good spot to hide an amplifier...hmm...

ive got an ipod and they rock i have used it in both my house and car and as my neigbours will state it gets plenty loud enough. and it you run it through the i trip to send it through the stereo its good but could be better. id run it in to a stereo that has an aux jack in the front so you can really pump it. ive see most of the other brands but most of them all have the draw back that they can not use acc encoding compression or any of the other encoders and the programs that they come with are completely useless. a good spot for the amp is ether under the seat or in the boot. also behind the seat is popular

It works with PC or Mac as already said. Get the 40gig and use it as an external hard drive for your computer. I back up albums onto an ipod (i.e. ones I've recorded). You can plug a phones line from an ipod into an amp but it's a very hot signal. You would be better of with a line level output from another device, or be careful by turning the ipod volume all the way down first and slowly turning it up.

What's wrong with using an Mp3 player CD deck? 10 + hours of music on one cd, in built 4x 50 Watt amps. If you find 4 good low wattage speakers to combine with one of these players you will have a kick ass stereo for unit for under $500 that is plenty loud enough, has no extra wires hanging around getting under your feet and more than enough music for any situation. There is no need for big amps if you choose your speakers intelligently. Small efficient speakers usually don't require big wattage and are louder, cleaner sounding and last longer.

As for the external hard drive issue, just back your stuff up on a DVD RW, much cheaper and far more permanent...There are many options and the Ipod sounds trendy but when compared to some of the other hard wired solutions is found to be lacking...

That's all true too, but 57 kombi doesn't want to cut the dashboard, hence no on board cd/mp3 player...
