Depends on what you want. Have you asked for a quote from both? Shannons have some features that NRMA don't offer, such as automatic retention of wreck, laid up and club car insurance. Shannons tend to be a little more expensive, but you do get extra benefits. It just depends on what you want and whether it is worth the extra money.

Shannons, you won't find better. They shit all over Vigil, there were $90 dearer to insure my KG. The bonus with SHANNONS is the recover clause. If you rite it off you get the $ and the car back.

Vigil wont insure a Kombi! They say its not a classic vehicle!

I recommend Shannons as I've had one claim with them (a car was in a crash and banged into my beetle parked on the road) and they let me drop the car off to my choice of repairer and it was fixed within 6 days and I didnt have to fill one form in.

I have 5 cars insured with them.

NRMA on the other hand examined my beetle (pic below) and said it was worth $1200!

After paying full comprehensive with NRMA for 3 years, I bumped into another car. NRMA examined my kombi, and said that they would cancel my cover and not pay for the other vehicle! They said that because there was rust in the kombi they would never have insured it if they knew. Not even third party. (The rust was minor daggy rust that I was in the process of fixing) I argued and pleaded and they would not budge.

So I rang NRMA to try to insure a (fictitious) kombi for third party. I even asked if the condition mattered (ie rust!). They said no, I only wanted third party so it didn't matter. Interestingly, when I discussed this with the claims department, they suddenly became more than happy to pay out my comprehensive claim.

I would never ever use NRMA again. It was far to stressful, and I nearly ended up with a $6000 bill for the other car. Lucky I'm stubborn!

Shannons wouldn't insure my car as there's no garage. Vigil was $200 cheaper for me than Shannons for a modified beetle and I can buy it back. Some companies specialise in classics, some do modifieds, some do new standard cars etc... I did try shannons first though

I wouldnt go past Shannons. They are awesome! I have had three claims with them, and they were fantastic. New parts, choice of repairer, understanding of the enthusiasts mind set... These three reasons alone are worth the price of admission. Plus, you get a free windscreen without affecting N/C....
Put differently, NRMA are useless. I wouldnt touch them with a bargepole!!!!!

Hey,
It's good to hear from people who have made a claim.
Usually you don't know what it's worth till you need to make a claim!
Anyone else made a claim out there??

Ill second that! The NRMA have lost the plot, I have been a member for 20 years (never used them for a call out), I asked them to insure my Oval (club plates) and they knocked me back, they said because I have never had comprehencive with them before they won't touch it. If they didn't have road service, they could kiss my arse goodbye, wich is probably what they want anyway! Shannons for me!

RACTas (as i live in tas) have a classic car insurance, i insured the notch for $7500 fully comp with heaps off benifits like accidentle damage, buy back like shannons for a measly $120 a year with free roadside assistance, now roadside assistance costs $90 per year so $30 extra and the car is fully insured!!
